Chopticon HS senior Jay Hammett committed to Salisbury University in 2014. He was kind enough to take time out for PBR Maryland and let us all get to know him better.
Why did you choose Salisbury?
+ I chose Salisbury not only because of the baseball program but the school felt like home to me. The area I'm from is very rural and Salisbury seems like a home away from home to me.
What other schools were you considering?
+ I was considering Towson, William & Mary, and Longwood to name a few.
Now that your commitment is over, what are your goals for your senior year?
+ My goal is to win a 3A state championship. We have a bunch of returning seniors this year from our conference championship team last year, and I'm hoping to make a run all the way to the end.
What would you like to get accomplished before you step on campus at Salisbury?
+ I want to maintain a GPA above a 3.5 and try to get a 4.0 for the year. I also want to make sure that I am well prepared physically and mentally for baseball as well as school so that I can achieve the best when I enroll this fall.
What are you looking forward to the most about Salisbury?
+ I cannot wait to meet new people through baseball and school itself, but to also receive a top notch education.
Who did you play for over the summer and what was your most memorable experience?
+ During the summer I played in an adult league in Southern Maryland named CHASM. It was a great experience playing with former minor league players and current college players. It really shows you the amount of talent that is all around you.
Who has been the most influential person over your baseball career and why?
+ To me, my entire family has been the biggest influence to me. Without them devoting time to traveling all over the East Coast through the years, I would not be where I am today. This means everyone including my parents, my brother, my grandparents, as well as my aunts and uncles.
Who is your favorite MLB player and why?
+ My favorite MLB player would have to be Adam Jones. Not only is he a fantastic baseball player, but he seems to love every minute of it. He is very interactive with the fans and makes you feel like he isn't bigger than life like some other professional athletes.
What are you going to bring to Salisbury as a freshman?
+ My freshman year I will bring a competitive attitude to the table and a team player mindset. I would be willing to do anything for the team whatever is best for what the moment calls for.
What is your goal by the end of your freshman year? By the end of your college career?
+ My goal by the end of my freshman year will be to continue to have above a 3.5 GPA into college and have an effective role on the team. By the end of my college career I hope that I had an effective baseball career and I am able to be accepted into a physical therapy program to achieve my career choice. If the opportunity comes to play more baseball after college in a professional league I would say that's a dream come true.
Random question: What is your favorite movie and favorite follow on twitter?
+ My favorite movie is The Sandlot
