Annapolis Area Christian HS senior Kasey Gast committed to Iona College in 2014. The LHP was on the mound for AACS in many games as a junior and looks to lead the staff in the 2015 season. Kasey was kind enough to take time out for PBR Maryland and let us all get to know him better.
Why did you choose Iona?
-- Academically, Iona offers the concentrations I am looking for, and is located in an area with unlimited employment potential after graduation (New York City). Athletically, Coach Carey is a man of character, and the atmosphere he has built around his program is something I want to surround myself with.
What other schools were you considering?
-- Cairn University (PA), Flagler College, Bloomsburg University, Wilmington University (DE), and Radford
Now that your commitment is over, what are your goals for your senior year?
-- Continue to work hard and prepare myself in the best way possible for college and beyond. My goals honestly haven't changed a whole lot since I committed.
What would you like to get accomplished before you step on campus at Iona?
-- I want to involve myself a little more heavily in youth coaching and community service, since I am passionate about giving back with the baseball talent God has blessed me with.
What are you looking forward to the most about Iona?
-- The opportunity to compete at a Division 1 institution, and furthering my education at the same time.
Who did you play for over the summer and what was your most memorable experience?
-- This past summer I competed for the Arena Starz South 17u. The most memorable experience I had was throwing a no hitter at the Dynamic Mid-Atlantic Championship in August.
Who has been the most influential person over your baseball career and why?
-- My high school coaches have been awesome in teaching me how to carry myself (for the record, my dad is one of my high school coaches as well)
Who is your favorite MLB player and why?
-- Kevin Youkilis, because of his intensity and durability.
What are you going to bring to Iona as a freshman?
-- I will be the hardest worker on the team, on and off the field. Period.
