The inaugural Pennsylvania Travel Baseball State Championships kicked off yesterday with 12 games contested at the Iron Horse Sports Complex in Windber. 10 teams from Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland, along with two teams organized by PBR each played a pair of pool play games on the first day of the three day event. Today's schedule includes six more games to conclude pool play followed by semifinals action in three playoff brackets. Tournament action is set to conclude on Sunday with championship games in all three brackets.
Following is a brief look at highlights of game action from day one and those prospects that shined for their respective clubs. Follow @pbrpennsylvania on Twitter for live updates of all tournament action beginning with today's first pitch at 8:00 AM.
pool play results
Pittsburgh Outlaws 3 vs. Flood City Elite 2
The Outlaws rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two runs in the 6th inning for the win. Logan Williamson led Flood City with a 2-for-2, BB, SB, R stat line.
Team PBR Red 7 vs. Indian Valley Storm 3
PBR Red opened pool play by scoring four runs over the first two innings, and, after Souderton Area 2019 LHP Aaron Groller went 2.1 hitless innings to keep the Storm in the game in the middle innings, extended the lead in the 6th with a two-RBI single from Pennsbury 2018 catcher Joshua Tesarck. Parkland 2017 RHP Ryan Giovenco attacked the zone over the first three innings, while West Chester Henderson 2018 RHP Brady Bash was solid at the back end of the game for PBR Red.
Pittsburgh Spikes 9 vs. Blue Chips Baseball 7
A 4-4 game after four innings saw the Blue Chips plate three runs in the 5th inning for a 7-4 lead. The Spikes answered with five runs of their own for the win. Connor Feustle, Hunter Spalt and Luke Trainer combined to go 7-for-10, with 2 runs scored and three runs batted in for the Blue Chips in the loss.
Team All*American 11 vs. Team PBR White 5
Five players tallied multi-hit games for Team All*American, which posted crooked numbers in its final three trips to the plate. PBR White grabbed an early lead off run-scoring extra-base hits from Crestwood 2018 1B/RHP Colin Macko and Vincentian Academy 2018 infielder Kyler Fedko. Pine-Richland 2017 RHP Hunter Treece picked up the win in four innings of work, while Upper Moreland 2017 RHP Tom Jacob was solid in a three-inning start for PBR White.
Keystone State Bombers 7 vs. WNY Renegades 6
Tommy Savastio was a one man wrecking crew for the Bombers going 2-for-3 with two doubles, including one in walkoff fashion, and two RBI to lead the Bombers to a come from behind win. Nick Stoner picked up the win with one inning of relief topping at 90 mph.
It was all Renegade early however as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead on the strength of a solo home run from Andrew Short and a two run blast from Ryan Williams.
West Hills Show 6 vs. Team Phenom PA 3
Seneca Valley 2017 IF/RHP Tyler Smith did a little bit of everything for the West Hills Show, as he picked up the win on the mound, went 3-3 with two doubles, and played solid defense at shortstop. Bonner-Prendergast 2017 outfielder Domenic Dellabarba wen 2-3 out of the leadoff spot for Team Phenom.
Team PBR Red 7 vs. Flood City Elite 3
Every batter in the Team PBR Red lineup had at least one hit with the exception of Jordan Art would walked in both of his plate appearances. Omar Ward impressed in relief for Flood City Elite sitting 86-88 while topping at 89 mph.
Pittsburgh Outlaws 8 vs. Indian Valley Storm 1
Canon-McMillan 2017 RHP Dylan Coyle retired 15 in a row at one point, finishing with a line of 7 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K. Coyle also went 2-3 at the plate, as did Trinity 2017 Nick Hernberger, who nearly decapitated the pitcher his first at-bat on a single that registered 90 mph off the bat. Souderton Area 2017 outfielder Jack DeSpain logged his second extra base hit in as many games for the Storm.
Pittsburgh Spikes 3 vs. Team All*American 2
Team All*American took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning on the strength of a Jordan Fiedor triple. The Spikes answered with three runs of their own in the 5th including a single by Andrew Turzai for the game winning run. Thomas Zbezinski impressed in his start for Team All*American working three scoreless innings of one hit baseball with four strikeouts.
Team PBR White 9 vs. Blue Chips Baseball 5
Blue Chips jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one inning, which included a two-run double by Loyola Blakefield (MD) 2017 catcher Hunter Spalt, but PBR White scored in every inning but the second on its way to the win. Vincentian Academy 2018 infielder Kyler Fedko went 2-3 with a triple and stole bases at will, while Morgantown (WV) 2017 outfielder Zane Gallagher went 2-3 with a double to lead PBR White.
Keystone State Bombers 5 vs. West Hills Show 3
The West Hills Show jumped on Bombers starter Santino Nave' for five hits and three runs in the top of the first inning. Nave' answered by working the final four frames allowing no runs while striking out eight. The Bombers erased the early deficit thanks in part to five stolen bases that led to a three run uprising in the third inning.
Team Phenom PA 5 vs. WNY Renegades 1
Downingtown West 2019 LHP Aidan McEvoy held the Renegades to one hit over four innings, Liberty 2017 infielder Elias Gross went 2-2 with a double and a walk and Bonner-Prendergast 2017 first baseman Tim Dougherty hit his second double in as many games to pace the offense.
