Maryland Western Trials: Corner Infield Analysis

30 players from across the Old Line State, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey participated in this year's Maryland Western Trials at Mount St. Mary's University. Players were put through a pro-style workout in front of our PBR Maryland scouting staff with Trackman and Blast also on hand to record data. Below are evaluations on the five corner infielders from the event.
CORNER INFIELDERS

John Griffith 1B / Henry E. Lackey, MD / 2021
Body: 6’0’’, 165 pounds. Athletic, lean frame with room to fill out. Hit: RHH. Hit from a slightly open stance with a wide base. Smooth back load and short stride. Creates some hand separation. Short to the ball with a more level swing path, quick hands, and showed quick bat speed through the zone. Tall one-handed finish with extension past contact. Gap-to-gap line drive approach with pop. Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Power mostly to the pull side present with more projected. Arm: RH. INF - 65 mph. Throws with long arm action from a mid three-quarter slot. Defense: Fields the ball out in front with fundamental footwork and quick, clean exchanges. Run: 7.67 60-yard time.

Kai Hardesty RHP / 1B / LInganore , MD / 2021
Body: 6’3’’, 245 pounds. Big, strong, solid body type. Hit: RHH. Hits from a slightly open stance with a wide base. Slight rock back load and short stride. Rotational swing with a level path and some extension. Showed a mostly middle to pull side line drive approach with some pop. Power: 89 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Occasional power to the pull side. Arm: RH. INF - 78 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Fields the ball out in front from a strong base and funnels to chest. Showed fundamental footwork on double play turns to second base with clean exchanges. Run: 8.20 60-yard time.

Mike Wineke 1B / LHP / Calvert Hall, MD / 2021
Body: 6’0’’, 220 pounds. Strong, solid, physical body type. Hit: LHH. Hit from a slightly open stance at the plate and lands closed in stride. Short to the ball with quick hands and bat speed through the zone. Stays behind the ball well with a strong lower half. Slightly uphill swing path with good extension and a one-handed finish. Nice feel for the barrel working mostly middle to the pull-side with easy pop going yard eight times during BP. Power: Event best 96 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Plus power to the pull side with strength also present. Arm: LH. INF - 75 mph. Throws with short arm action from a mid to high three quarter slot. Defense: Fields the ball out in front with a quick funnel to chest. Slight glove tap in exchange and fundamental footwork on double plays turns to second base. Run: 8.05 60-yard time.

Nick Worch 1B / RHP / St Mary's Ryken, MD / 2021
Body: 6’2’’, 215 pounds. Strong, solid frame. Hit: RHH. Hits from a square stance at the plate with weight slightly loaded on back side. Minimal load and short stride with hand separation. Stays behind the ball well with a longer, uphill swing path. Gets good extension through contact with a strong two-handed finish. Worked mostly middle to the pull side during BP. Power: 90 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Showed some power to the pull side with more projected. Arm: RH. INF - 74 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. Defense: Fields the ball in the middle of his body with a quick funnel to the chest. Clean exchanges to second base on double play feeds with fundamental footwork. Run: 7.88 60-yard time.

Sean Wright 3B / C / Pallotti, MD / 2021
Body: 6’2’’, 200 pounds. Strong, solid body type. Hit: RHH. Hits from a crouched, square stance at the plate with a rock back load and average stride length. Short to the ball with an uphill swing path and swings with intent. Showed extension through contact and a two-handed finish. Strong lower half involvement and pull-side approach. Power: 89 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Present strength in the swing and power to the pull side. Arm: RH. INF - 76 mph. Throws with long arm action from a mid to high three-quarter slot from third base. C - 70 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid three quarter slot behind the plate. Defense: INF: Early set-up and fields the ball out in front of his body. Quick shuffle footwork, squaring shoulders to target and gains ground on throws across the diamond. Clean exchanges. C: Side-steps out of crouch and gains ground on throws to second base. Showed quick, clean transfers and accurate throws to the bag. Pop times ranged 2.12-2.25. Run: 7.45 60-yard time.
