We are just over a month away from the start of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association season across the state and we continue our season preview of the upcoming 2017 season with our preview of class 1A in Maryland. We will recap the playoffs from last year, list top prospects, breakdown of each section, and rank our best bets to make it through. Let's take a look into 1A.
2016 Recap
After an up and down spring season, Brunswick was able to put it all together to play their best baseball at the right time en route to a repeat as 1A state champion. It was a hard fought run to the end with three-run wins over Boonsboro, Smithsburg, Northern Garrett to get to the states. Brunswick held off St. Michaels in one of the better games of the year in the state semi-finals to defeat St. Michaels 6-5 and then Andrew Wanger put in a dominant pitching performance in the state championship to defeat a young Patterson Mill team 4-0.
Patterson Mill had one of the tougher roads to travel to make it to the state championship barely getting by a tough Bohemia Manor team 6-5, then upsetting a McDonough team 4-1 whom made it to the state championship the prior season and had many of the same faces from that roster on board.
St. Michaels had a strong showing in the 1A East after upsets took the top seeds from both sections. The No. 2 seeded St. Michaels came up just short in their state championship hopes after falling to Brunswick 6-5 in a nine-inning exciting game that saw St. Michaels come back from a 5-0 deficit to take the game into extras.
