Maryland Insider covers a wide variety of information on players in the state.  We will cover events, players to watch, best in class, and many more topics that will focus on the many levels of high school baseball.

The Southern Maryland Winter Camp is in year 30 of existence and PBR Maryland was in attendance last weekend.  After having some ice issues to overcome, the event was able to operate smoothly and had another solid talent pool.  This issue of Maryland Insider identifies a few of the players that stood out from the event (in no particular order). 

--Jaret Bennett 2016 (Colonel Richardson HS) is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound LHP with a good frame and nice projection.  He sat in the 83-85 range on the mound and showed a split/fork in the 64-67 range.  The ball came out well from his ¾ arm slot with average arm action.  For an early bullpen showed decent command of his fastball.  Would like to see more of his secondary stuff in game action. 

--Spencer Horwitz 2016 (St. Pauls HS) is a 6-foot, 180-pound C that showed good bat speed and quick hands.  The left-handed hitter showed pull side power with ability to develop with more gap-to-gap ability as he matures.  Athletic frame and moved well behind the plate.

--Matt Smith 2016 (Parkside HS) is a 6-foot-2 190-pound physical OF.  Athletic frame that swings from the left side.  Showed good hands and a quick bat with pop at the plate.   Stayed inside the ball well and used the middle of the field with good extension. 

--Kieran Garner 2017 (River Hill HS) is a 6-foot-2 195 tall, lean, and long armed pitcher.  In this bullpen was 84-87 and has showed upper 80’s in the fall.  Worked downhill very well with downward action on his ball.  Had average feel for a breaking ball at this time along with good feel for the changeup at 73-76.  Has deception in delivery and ball jumps out of his hand.

--Jacob Paulishak 2017 (Middletown HS) is a 6-foot-2 170-pound potential two-way player in college.  As position player, was smooth in the field and showed good hands and ball carried well from the middle.  Right-handed hitter with an open and tall stance.  Was able to square himself and showed above average bat speed and quick hands.  On the mound sat in low 80’s with some run and sink off his fastball.  Threw an 11/5 CB with average feel.

--Connor Shockley 2017 (Parkside HS) is a 6-foot 170-pound infielder.   Good balance with good bat speed and quick hands.  Simple load and attacked the baseball with some extension.  Projects well with an athletic frame and put together.   Still need to see more defensively but is one to keep an eye on.
