Calvert Hall 3, Archbishop Spalding 0
In an early MIAA battle of top teams, Calvert Hall came away with victory off of another strong pitching performance by Cardinal starter Nick Delp. Delp pitched a complete game two-hit shutout holding the Spalding offense at bay.
The game was a pitcher’s duel heading into the sixth inning with Delp and Cavs starter Jordan Carr both pitching gems. The Cardinal half of the sixth turned out to be the difference. Dariel Torres led off the inning with a single and Jack Finn reached on an error. Spalding then was able to get two quick outs by thwarting a sac bunt attempt and striking out the next hitter. With two outs and two on, 2017 grad and UNC commit Brandon Dorsey hit a go ahead three run home run that was all the offense Calvert Hall would need.
Carr pitched six strong innings for Spalding, giving up three runs (all unearned) and scattering two hits with nine strikeouts.
Gaithersburg 3, Whitman 2
The Trojans were able to hold off a late inning comeback to beat Whitman on Wednesday afternoon. Nick Pantos made the start for Gaithersburg and went four strong innings giving up two hits while striking out four. Pantos helped his cause going 2-for-3 at the plate.
Whitman made a push in the sixth inning after Andrew Cashmere hit a one-out single off of Trojan reliever Brad Sawyer. Alex Clark then hit a triple to right field, knocking in Cashmere and later scored off of an infield single by Danny Mills. Anthony Felitti came in for the Trojans and thwarted the Whitman rally by striking out two, leaving two runners on. Felitti pitched a perfect seventh to close the game out.
Sawyer went 1-for-3 at the plate and his sixth inning single knocked in two which proved to be the difference in the game.
