PBR Spotlight Game: Phillips Andover vs Tabor Academy

Phillips Andover and Tabor Academy squared off on Wednesday.

The bats were out early and often for the Big Blue of Phillips Andover on a warm and sunny afternoon. Phillips pounded out 14 hits, including three hits and five RBIs by junior DH John Simourian.

Phillips used a different pitcher in each of the seven innings as a tune up for this weekend’s upcoming tournament.

The list was highlighted by senior RHP’s Tim Salvadore (VA Tech commit), Thomas Lane (BC commit) and Jacob Nelson (UPenn commit).

Tabor utilized four pitchers on the afternoon, with junior RHP Andrew Gorham getting the start and earning the loss.

Tabor’s offense was highlighted by senior centerfielder PJ Poulin (UConn commit), who had three hits including a double and junior catcher Jeremiah Adams (Oklahoma commit), with a single and a home run.

Poulin led the game off for the Seawolves against Big Blue sophomore starter Cameron Garfield with a solid double to the gap in left-center. He would score a batter later on a towering home run by Adams over the left field fence giving Tabor the early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half, freshman centerfielder Joe Simourian and senior leftfielder John Festa walked. Sophomore third baseman Taylor Beckett singled to left to load the bases. Simourian then began his outstanding game with a two-run single to left, scoring Joe Simourian and Festa. Beckett would later come around to score on a sacrifice fly by senior shortstop Benjamin Reinisch, giving Phillips a 3-2 lead after one inning.

Freshman Travis Lane started the second inning for Phillips and walked Seawolves senior third baseman Sam Bacchiocchi. After a wild pitch, Bacchiocchi scored after senior David Almeida reached on an error by Reinisch at short. Almeida would come around to score two batters later when Poulin drove him in with a single to left, making the score 4-3 Tabor.

The Big Blue would come right back after Joe Simourian was hit by a pitch, Festa singled to right. After a successful double-steal, Simourian crossed the plate and Festa was in at second. John Simourian’s third RBI of the day drove in Festa, putting Phillips back on top. Next batter, senior second baseman Matthew Hosman (UMass commit) doubled to the gap in left-center, scoring Simourian. Hosman then scored on a single by Reinisch and after two innings the score was 7-4 Big Blue.

Salvadore started the 3rd inning for Phillips and immediately walked senior DH Mason Johnson and allowed a single to senior second baseman Dom Carlozzi. After a wild pitch Johnson came around to score on a groundout by Almeida, cutting the lead to 7-5.

Tabor would not cross the plate the remainder of the day. Junior RHP Cameron Coelho was able to keep The Big Blue off the scoreboard the next two innings, while Lane and Nelson shut the door on Tabor in the 4th and 5th innings, respectively.

Just when it was looking like the scoring was easing up, Phillips exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fifth, chasing Coelho from the game.

Junior right fielder Payton Jancsy reached on a two base error to begin the frame and moved to third on a bunt single by senior catcher Samuel Zager. Joe Simourian then knocked in Jancsy with an infield single. After Festa walked to load the bases, Beckett was hit to drive in the ninth run of the day. The next pitch was wild, bringing another run from third. Then John Simourian capped his day with a two-run double, making the score 12-5.

Hosman followed with a single to left, scoring Simourian. After Reinisch singled, sophomore first baseman Robert Cerulle reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Hosman. Janscy (who lead off the inning) doubled, putting runners on second and third in front of Zager. Tabor brought in Almeida to pitch but the damage continued after a single to left-center, scoring both runners and giving Phillips the 16-5 edge.

Senior LHP David Gaetano (Oberlin commit) and Hosman pitched scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th against the Seawolves to seal the game.
