2019 Future Games Preview - Team Massachusetts

One of Prep Baseball Report’s premier events has a new home in 2019.

The eighth annual Future Games, held previously at Grand Park north of Indianapolis, will now be held at LakePoint in Cartersville, Ga. on July 31-Aug. 3. Top uncommitted prospects in the 2021, 2022 and 2023 classes will participate in one of the most popular events each year.

There will be 28 teams, including Team Massachusetts, with players representing 38 states plus the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Each team will play three games the final three days of the event after all position players are put through a showcase workout on Wednesday, the first day of the Future Games.

Massachusetts will open against New York at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday, with New Jersey Friday’s 10 a.m. opponent before closing out with Connecticut on Saturday at 9 a.m..

More than 200 colleges from across the country will be looking on as approximately 500 players participate in this year’s event. In 2018, a record 253 college and professional coaches and scouts were in attendance, six more than the previous season and around 100 more than the year prior.

“The Future Games is a unique opportunity for players to showcase themselves in front of the best colleges in the country,” Massachusetts Director of Scouting Dennis Healy said.

Jack Beauchesne and Griffin Cofsky are the lone returnee on this year’s Team Massachusetts while Luca Danos is a member of the 2019 squad after playing for Team Select in 2018.

“This event helps to open the eyes of many players, allowing them to see that there are tons of players out there that can play as well,” Healy noted. “This in turn helps initiate a greater work ethic that each guy starts to employ in their own game. It is really a great experience across the board.”

While only two players on last year’s Team Massachusetts are back, along with Danos from Team Select, 14 of those not returning have made a college commitment. North Carolina, Bryant, Kansas State, Maryland, Connecticut, Wake Forest, Boston College, Hartford, Holy Cross, Dartmouth, Harvard and Maine all have commitments from 2018 Team Massachusetts players.

Aaron Downs of Pella High School in Iowa was last year’s MVP. Mac Horvath of Rochester Century High School in Minnesota was the 2017 most valuable player with Dillon Lifrieri of Wilton High School in Connecticut the 2016 award winner.

Sam Carlson of Burnsville, Minn. was the 2015 MVP, while Duncan Pence of Farragut High School in Tennessee won in 2014, Nolan Watson of Lawrence North in Indiana in 2013, Colby Fitch of Hickman, Mo. in 2012 and Ryne Roper of Harrisburg, Ill. in 2011.

Following is a look at Team Massachusetts - as well as Josh Fischer, a 2021 from Hopkinton, Ma., who will be pitching for Team Select - and the thoughts of each player that gave their views heading into the Future Games.

Luca Danos SS / 2B / Noble and Greenough, MA / 2021

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
Danos:
I had a very successful spring high school season as a re-class playing SS every day during my first year boarding at Noble & Greenough School, which culminated with the game-winning home run against our school’s rival to help our team finish third in the competitive Independent School League. I worked hard in the weight room in the off-season gaining 30 good pounds which led to more physicality and a lot more gap-to-gap power and extra-base hits. I hit .375 and nearly .500 for the last two/thirds of the season. I’m proud to say I’ve been named captain – a role I accept with pride having learned from great captains this past year.  I’ve continued with great success as a 2021 on a team of 2020s this summer playing with the North East Baseball Rays batting leadoff, hitting over .350 with power, and getting on base nearly 50 percent of the time. I’ve played SS, 3B and 2B. I’ve also been working with the local university’s track coaches to improve my running technique and speed. It’s been a terrific season where I’ve continued to improve my game in all phases.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Massachusetts for the Future Games?
Danos:
Last year I attended the Future Games playing for Team Select so I’m really excited and proud to represent Team Massachusetts this year. I’ve played with and against many of the great players on the team and I’m looking forward to competing against the best in the country.  The event is really well run and is designed for athletes to compete. I received a good amount of attention from schools last year that I’ve kept in touch with and I’m excited to show coaches my physical progress this year.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
Danos:
Having attended last year, I expect to be given every opportunity to demonstrate my skills in front of a ton of coaches – and to have fun. I’ve played in a lot of showcases – this event is as good as gets.

PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games?
Danos:
I attended the Future Games last year and participated in the 2019 PBR Pro Case in Connecticut.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?
Danos:
I’m blessed to be staying in touch with many excellent academic and baseball schools and have received offers from mid-majors. More recently, I’ve been talking to schools in the Power 5 as well as some Ivy’s. I’ve tried to focus most of my energy on just getting better and not too much on narrowing down schools of interest. There will be time for that after the Future Games.

Tommy Fahey C / 2B / Immaculate, CT / 2021

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
Fahey:
I was starting varsity catcher for Immaculate High School in Danbury, Ct. and was a SWC All-Patriot Division selection in the spring. This summer I am playing for CT Coastal Athletics 18U team and attending various showcases and clinics to help increase my exposure and improve my game.

Fahey:
I’m honored to have been invited to play for Team Massachusetts in the Future Games and excited to be playing with some of the best athletes in the country.

Fahey:
I’m looking forward to being able to showcase my abilities and skill set in front of all of the college coaches and scouts in attendance and playing against some of the most talented high school baseball players in the country. I’m looking forward to the challenge of playing against great competition to elevate my game and level of play.

Fahey:
I participated in the 2019 New England Top Prospect Games on 6/19/19 and the 2018 New England Academic Games II on 8/19/18.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?
Fahey:
I am In the beginning stages of my college search and keeping all options open.  I’m looking for a great academic institution where I can continue my baseball career and continue to grow and improve as a ballplayer and contribute to that team. I;m looking for the right academic and athletic fit at a top-notch college or university.

Josh Fischer LHP / OF / Hopkinton, MA / 2021

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
Fischer:
I made the starting rotation for Hopkinton High School as a sophomore LHP and helped the team advance to the Massachusetts D2 Finals for the first time in 15 years. I was among the league leaders in ERA (1.35) and wins (7-1), and hope to build off of that next year. I attend Winning Pitchers Academy year-round for conditioning and training, and attribute a lot of my early high school success to it. I enjoy playing baseball during the summer with my travel team, Team Massachusetts Baseball out of Framingham.

PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games?

Ethan Hillenberg C / Milton Academy, MA / 2021

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
Hillenberg:
This spring I played for Milton Academy out of Milton, Ma. I repeated my sophomore year there this past school year so the spring season was a pretty big adjustment for me. I felt welcomed by my teammates and coaches which made the transition much easier. We had a pretty successful year in a very tough league finishing, i believe, at 7-9. This summer I am playing for Northeast Baseball Rays. We went on a two-week trip to Wilson Premier in Florida then on to Georgia. Although the trip did not go as well as we expected it to record-wise, it was great to get further exposure to schools down south and to get to play baseball every day. We then finished our season up north with a couple local tournaments.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Massachusetts for the Future Games?
Hillenberg:
I am very excited and honored to be apart of Team Massachusetts at such a prestigious event. I am very excited to play with some of the best players from my class in the state and learn from them as well. This is a huge opportunity and I want to make the most out of it. I feel very lucky to be selected to play in an event that very few players get to experience.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
Hillenberg:
I’m not exactly sure what to expect going into the event. It will be good to meet new teammates and coaches and get to play in a competitive environment. I’m expecting it to be a little intimidating due to the amount of coaches and scouts that will he present.

PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games?
Hillenberg:
Before this event, I have gone to NEB Scout Days the last two years.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?

Alex Irizarry SS / 2B / Amherst Regional, MA / 2022

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
Irizarry:
In high school I hit over .400 and was named All-League in Division 1 of the MIAA. This summer I have continued to hit well, again hovering around .400 and demonstrating an ability to drive the ball. More than one-third of my hits have been for extra bases.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Massachusetts for the Future Games?
Irizarry:
I am honored to have been selected to represent Massachusetts in this prestigious event. Our baseball season is shorter than in other areas of the country, and we often play in less than ideal weather, which I believe makes us tougher, grittier players. I am especially proud to be from western Massachusetts, an area of the state that doesn’t have a huge population but has a great baseball tradition.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
Irizarry:
I look forward to playing against the best rising sophomores and juniors in the country and seeing how I stack up against them. The opportunity to play in front of coaches from some of the best college baseball programs in the country is also exciting.

PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games?
Irizarry:
I participated in the Best of the West Showcase and the New England Top Prospect Games.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?
Irizarry:
Boston College, UConn, University of Rhode Island, St. John’s University, UMass-Lowell, UMass-Amherst, Siena College, Villanova University, Duke University, University of Hartford, Northeastern University, Bryant University.

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.

I started the year as a relief pitcher, and then moved into a starting role about halfway through the season. I threw 27 1/3 innings, while giving up only three earned runs and finishing with a 0.77 ERA with 25 strikeouts. When I was not pitching, I was the starting left fielder and I hit .306. After the spring season came to a close, I was named captain of the team for this upcoming season (as a junior). This summer I have been playing for the Mizuno Nor’easter Runbirds. I have thrown 26 innings with a 5-0 record with 36 strikeouts while allowing only four earned runs. Matthew Sapienza RHP / 3B / Phillips Academy Andover, MA / 2021

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
Sapienza:
My high school and summer ball seasons have been great this year. Although our high school team wasn’t able to go back-to-back in the Central New England Prep School Baseball League, we still had a great season. For me just getting to be a part of such an amazing team is good enough no matter the outcome. As a pitcher this year has been a major step up for me. I have gained velocity on my fastball and solidified my off speed pitches. I just got back from a 16U tournament in Georgia where my fastball topped at 88 mph and I complimented it with a slider and change-up. When I am not pitching I play in the infield, mainly second base to preserve my arm.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Massachusetts for the Future Games?
Sapienza:
Being apart of Team Massachusetts is going to be a phenomenal experience. Getting the chance to play with some of the best players in the state is going to be one of the best baseball experiences I will have. It’s going to be a great time to showcase myself as well as play with new teammates as well as teammates that I have played with before.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
Sapienza:
I am anticipating highly-competitive games that are going to be really fun to be a part of. This is what baseball is all about. Where in the past I may have played teams that have had some holes in their lineups, I know that these players were picked for a reason and the competition is going to be great. It’s going to be an intense few games playing in front of lots of colleges as well.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?
Sapienza:
I have called a few colleges like Northeastern, Army, Bucknell and Rutgers. I have gone to a BC camp and Georgetown camp as well and I am attending a Duke camp in August. I have also heard from Elon and Dartmouth as well as UConn.

it is an honor representing Team Massachusetts for the Future Games. I am beyond gracious for the people who have helped me get this far.

This event will definitely put me in a tough battle on the mound but that is what pitching is all about, overcoming the competition.

Smithson:
I have participated in three other PBR events, two indoor pitching showcases and one outdoor team event in Connecticut.

Wade:
I had a terrific sophomore season at St. Sebastian’s School on one of the top-ranked teams in New England helping lead the team to a 16-4 record and posting a .428 batting average, the highest average on the team. I also finished the year with 97 GPA and was nominated for participation in the National Honor Society. This summer, as a member of the Boston Prospects, I’m among the team leaders in batting average, RBIs and home runs while playing first base and right and left field.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Massachusetts for the Future Games?
Wade:
I’m honored to be a part of Team Massachusetts for the Future Games and I’m very excited to “get after it” in Georgia. It’s not every day that you get to play against top competition from different states and show off your talents against the best players.

Thomas White LHP / OF / Phillips Academy, Andover (Fall 2019), MA / 2023

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
White:
My travel team, Legends Prospects 14U, has had a terrific spring/summer season.  We are 48-8-3 and won the May Day Classic at New England Baseball Complex and Super 25 New England Regional.  We recently returned from Fort Myers, Fla. where we finished second (by 1 run) in a national tournament. I received the MVPitcher award for that tournament. Our team followed that up winning the league championship.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Massachusetts for the Future Games?
White:
I think it’s pretty cool. Baseball players from the northeast don’t get a lot of credit, but we play in every weather condition imaginable and have the benefit of time off to train in other sports as well. I feel like that’s an advantage for durability.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
White:
I’m not really sure what to expect, this will be my first showcase so I’m just looking to have a good showing. I’m starting high school at Phillips Academy Andover this fall so I’m happy that four of my future high school teammates will be on the team too. This will be a good opportunity to get to know them.

PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games?
White:
I have only participated in one Scout Day earlier this year at Legends Baseball, Middleton Ma.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?
White:
I’ve spoken with a few schools but since I just got out of eighth grade, I’m not ready to narrow that list down yet. I’d like to be able to evaluate a couple opportunities to find the right fit.
