Louisiana Scout Blog: Baton Rouge Umpires Scrimmage

Alex Armand & Tyler Leary
PBR Louisiana Staff

The 2024 high schoool baseball season has officially kicked off, as programs across the state were able to officially start practicing last week, on Monday January 22, 2024.  Teams also began competing in scrimmages last week, and our staff went out to the CCUA 4th Annual Umpires Scrimmage, at Parkview Baptist High School on Saturday January 27, 2024, to check out the action.  Today, we begin our coverage of the 2024 high school baseball season by releasing the first Louisiana Scout Blog of the new year.  The Louisiana Scout Blog provides insider information and scouting notes from our scouting staff during the high school baseball season. This running blog will feature information on underclass prospects, unsigned seniors, draft prospects, and anything else that is notable. We will provide a wide range of information, including player evaluations, velocities, pop times, home to first times, and more.

Continue to check back here, as the Louisiana Scouting Staff will add scouting reports, upon the completion of each week.

SATURDAY JANUARY 27, 2024

+ 2026 RHP Logan Sorrel (Dunham HS)

6'3" 195 lbs. projectable and durable frame with present physicality.  Sorrel got the start in the Saturday night cap and showed exactly why he's the top ranked right-handed pitcher in the state's 2026 class.  The Dunham product worked through a controlled and repeatable delivery, and used a loose & easy arm stroke to release the ball from a high 3/4 slot with minimal effort.  His FB was electric at 88-91 mph and his 73-77 mph CB flashed plus with tight spin and late top-to-bottom break.  He finished his lone no-hit inning of work with 2 BB's and 3 K's.  At this point, Sorrel looks like a "slam dunk" Power 5 arm, thanks to the ease of his operation, high floor, and even higher ceiling.

+ 2025 RHP Samuel Mitchell (Parkview Baptist HS)

Mitchell was a standout performer at our State Games event this past fall and he continued to show that he's trending in the right direction this past Saturday.  Noticeably stronger and more physical, as he's gained around 20 lbs. over the off-season, and now stands in at 6'1" 185 lbs.  The Parkview Baptist product is a smooth mover down the slope with a loose & easy arm action, and on Saturday, he sat 88-89 mph with his FB, which is a tick up from when we last saw him in October of last year.  His mid-70's SL tunneled well off his FB with some sweep across the zone.  Mitchell ended up tossing one inning of no-hit baseball with one strikeout as well.  He's firmly cemented himself as one of the "must-see" uncommitted arms in Louisiana's 2025 class for college recruiters, and him being young for his class makes him even more appealing.

+ 2025 RHP Sawyer Pruitt (Live Oak HS)

Physical and durable 6'5" 225 lbs. frame with a starter profile.  The Ole Miss recruit bursted onto the scene last spring for the Eagles and has continued an upward trajectory into 2024.  Pruitt pitched with a ton of confidence on Saturday against U-High thanks to a 88-90 mph FB, to go along with good feel for an "11-5" shaped 75-77 mph CB and a 78-80 mph CH.  He finished his two-inning shutout stint with 4 K's and is one of a few of 2025's in the state that should garner attention from area scouts that are looking to get an early look at prep prospects for the 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

+ 2025 OF Noah Lewis (Catholic BR HS)

The former Future Gamer has consistently shown marked improvements in his offensive approach over the last 6-8 months, so it was no surprise that he showed well again on Saturday.  The University of Louisiana-Lafayette recruit laced a single back up the box on a FB down and away in his first at-bat, and then showed good plate discipline in his second at-bat by drawing a walk.  Lewis also swiped a bag to finish the day 1-1 with a RS.  He's an "80 Grade" runner with 6.35 60 speed and has an athletic 6'3" 185 lbs. frame that's easy to dream on, which is why area scouts will likely pay close attention to him on their trips to see his teammate, William Schmidt, this spring.

+ 2025 RHP Cade Durbin (Parkview Baptist HS)

6'0" 165 lbs. with wiry strength throughout.  The Parkview Baptist product was on-point once again on Saturday against a talented Catholic High team.  Durbin is an athletic mover down the slope and hides the ball well by striding slightly closed to create some "cross-fire" action.  His arm is super quick and on Saturday his FB sat in the 85-86 mph range with good life through the zone, and he also showed advanced feel for his 70-73 mph CB that he was able to land for strikes in any count.  The former Future Gamer is another guy who's super young for his grade, so we'll be monitoring his development closely this spring, as there is likely more jumps to come in his future.

+ 2025 RHP Jude Weller (Live Oak HS)

Fall reports out of Watson, LA were positive on the 5'10" 155 lbs. right-handler, so we were excited to see him on Saturday against U-High.  The Tulane recruit competes at a high-level and works at a super quick pace, wasting no time in between pitches.  Weller attacked hitters with a 85-87 mph FB that played best to his glove-side, while also showing the ability to land a short/tight top-to-bottom 70-73 mph CB.  He will be an integral part of what looks to be a really good Eagles pitching staff this spring.

+ 2024 INF/RHP Trip Dobson (Catholic BR HS)

Physical and athletic 6'1" 205 lbs. frame with long limbs.  There wasn't a lot of hitting to go around on Saturday, but Dobson had one of the hardest hit balls on the day, as he squared up a FB up in the zone that unfortunately ended up as a line out right at the left fielder.  Defensively, the Houston commit stood out, as he showed athleticism, smooth actions, and soft hands at both third base and shortstop.

+ 2024 RHP Wes Marien (Parkview Baptist HS)

6'2" 200 lbs. frame with present physicality.  The Parkview Baptist product got the start in the night cap against Dunham and turned in a brilliant performance.  Marien works through a controlled delivery and releases the ball from a high 3/4 arm slot.  His FB sat in the 85-87 mph range and played best up in the zone.  He was also able to land a bigger 68-69 mph CB for strikes in any count, as well as a 72-73 mph CH with some late-fade.  College programs looking for an uncommitted senior arm should give serious consideration at giving Marien a look this spring.

+ 2024 RHP Mike Stephens (Live Oak HS)

5'11" 185 lbs. durable frame with a physical lower-half.  Stephens was another standout arm for the Eagles on Saturday thanks to an athletic delivery and a quick arm.  The Southern Arkansas Community College recruit sat 86-88 mph with his FB that showed some life through the zone, and his 70-73 mph SL tunneled well off of it with short, tight, & late break down in the zone.  He tossed one inning of no-hit baseball with one punch out.

+ 2025 RHP Will Robinson (Parkview Baptist HS)

Robinson was a winner from our Baton Rouge Fall ID last October and turned in a quality outing on Saturday for the Eagles.  There's still substantial projection left within his 5'11" 165 lbs. frame, which has plenty of room to add strength and physicality.  Robinson uses a loose and longer arm stroke to release the ball from a 3/4 slot.  His FB sat in the 84-85 mph range with good ride and played best up in the zone, to go along with a developing low-70's SL.  The Parkview Baptist product ended up tossing one inning of no-hit baseball with 2 K's.
