Top Prospect Games: Pitcher Analysis

The Top Prospect Games took place over the summer at Northlake Christian School. The event hosted several of the top players from around the state in a pro style workout including defensive positional workouts, batting practice and 60-yard dash. The event finished up with a game where our staff was able to take in live competitive action. To wrap up event coverage, here is an analysis of all pitchers from their in game performance at the Top Prospect Games.

Kael Babin OF / RHP / East Ascension , LA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 60 / POS: 17
Smaller 5-foot-6 150 pound frame with room for added strength. Right handed pitcher works from a simple, in-line delivery, athletic throughout with quick arm speed. Short compact arm action with flowing rhythm into a high-¾ slot with a loose arm, good balance and an athletic finish. Fastball sat in the 80-83 mph range with slight arm side action on the two-seam and average command. Flashed a 68-70 mph slurve with 11/5 shape and rolling break with the ability to land it for strikes. |
Trevor Cole RHP / 1B / DeRidder, LA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 127 / POS: 22
Athletic 6-foot-3, 175-pound frame with developing strength in lower half. Right-handed pitcher with an in-line delivery, level shoulders with mild effort. Uses a longer arm action into a high-¾ slot with solid arm speed. Front side tends to rotate off of target a little early but flashed average fastball command at 77-80 mph. Fastball has some angle and was located well at the bottom of the zone with some arm side sink. Showed a solid breaking ball with 11/5 shape and rolling break at 67-70 mph. Hit on a couple breakers with late break while showing the ability to throw it for strikes. |
Justin Diggs RHP / OF / Northlake Christian, LA / 2021Solid 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame with a strong, muscular build and visible strength in lower half. Right-handed pitcher works quick with a high tempo, in-line drop and drive delivery. Longer arm action with the ability to alter his arm slot, varying from high-¾ to ¾ release with solid arm speed. Works around the zone with three pitches, fastball sat in the 74-79 mph range with developing command. Showed a breaking ball at 60-61 mph with early rolling break. Also, flashed a solid changeup at 60-61 mph. |
Brennan Duhe SS / RHP / Lutcher, LA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 88 / POS: 21
Athletic 5-foot-10, 163-pound frame with room for added strength. Right-handed pitcher that works from an athletic, in-line delivery with solid balance, smooth rhythm, and level shoulders. Easy delivery with a medium arm action into a true ¾ slot. Fastball sat 80-83 mph with slight arm side life. Flashed a tight spinning, short slider with 11/5 shape that plays well off of the fastball at 69-72 mph. Also, showed developing feel for a change up at 73-74 mph, more of a straight change with occasional, small arm side fade. |
Hayden Harmon C / RHP / Glenbrook, LA / 2023Average 5-foot-10, 175-pound frame with some physicality in frame. Right-handed pitcher works from an athletic, explosive in-line delivery. Medium, loose arm action into a high-¾ release with electric arm speed. Flashed average command of an 84-86 mph fastball that shows occasional arm side life but has a tendency to flatten out at times. Breaking ball shows quality spin at 70-72 mph. Breaking ball is a developing pitch that has a real chance moving forward. |
Hunter Harrell SS / RHP / Silliman, LA / 2021Long, rangy 6-foot-1, 160-pound frame with room to add strength. Right-handed pitcher works from a smooth, in-line delivery. Medium arm action into a high-¾ release, gets a little rotational late in the delivery causing slight fall off to the first base side. Creates good shoulder tilt with a high front side with solid arm speed, moderate effort and a small head whack. Fastball worked in the 79-82 mph range with solid command. Breaking ball showed early 11/5-shape and developing spin at 74-75 mph. |
Baylor Leonard 2B / RHP / Ascension Catholic, LA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 51 / POS: 2
Athletic 6-foot-1, 170-pound frame with room to add strength. Right-handed pitcher with an athletic delivery. Medium arm action into an over-the-top release. Creates some deception from slightly cross-fire delivery, working across his body with a quick arm and moderate effort, falling off to the first base side. Attacks the zone with the fastball at 83-86 mph with average command and downhill angle. Breaking ball shows average spin with rolling 12/6 action and commanded for strikes. |
Ethan Menard C / 3B / Notre Dame, LA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 56 / POS: 6
Physical right-handed pitcher works from a smooth delivery in-line delivery with average athleticism. Old school over the head delivery syncs up well with a medium arm action into a high-¾ release. Works with solid direction but occasionally flies open and spins off to the first base side. Flashes quick arm speed with minimal effort in delivery. Fastball sat anywhere from 82-87 mph range. Mostly 84-87 from the windup and 82-85 from the stretch. Solid average command of the fastball showing the ability to get to both sides off the plate with occasional cut to glove side.. Breaking ball showed average spin and 11/5-shape at 67-68 mph. Changeup is a solid pitch with average feel and late arm side fade. Right-hander with arm strength and the ability to get outs with the fastball. |
Parker Morgan LHP / 1B / St. Louis Catholic, LA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 45 / POS: 5
Long, wiry frame with plenty of room to add strength. Left-handed pitcher with a medium, deep arm action into a hight-¾ arm slot with a loose, quick arm action and medium effort. Fastball sat in the 82-84 mph, topping out at 85 mph, with some arm side run. He flashed the ability to spin an average breaking ball at 71-73 mph but his changeup was the pitch that stood out. The changeup was 74-75 mph, with arm side fade. |
Hunter Ponson RHP / 3B / Parkview Baptist, LA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 39 / POS: 8
Long, lean 6-foot-3, 195 pound projectable frame. Right-handed pitcher works from an athletic, explosive delivery with a short, compact arm action into a high-¾ release falling off slightly to the first base side. Fastball sat in the 83-85 mph after going through a full position player workout. We’ve seen the fastball flash better velo at times in the past but was definitely impressive at the Top Prospect Games. Fastball has finish at the plate and was commanded to both sides of the dish. Showed a solid breaking ball with 11/5 shape and average spin at 73-75 mph. Also, flashed feel for a cutter at 75-77 mph with late hard action. |
Solomon Riley RHP / The Dunham School, LA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 54 / POS: 10
Long 6-foot-4, 180-pound frame with tons of projection in build. Right-handed pitcher with big upside. Easy, in-line delivery with a shorter arm action into a high-¾ slot with quick arm speed. Showed average fastball command with steep angle and slight arm side run. Works downhill, attacking the bottom of the zone at 84-87 mph, topping out at 88 mph. Flashed an average breaking ball that showed a tendency to back up at times but hit on a couple with 11/5 shape and average depth at 68-71 mph. Changeup is a developing pitch at 77-78 mph with solid arm side fade. Projectable right-hander with upside flashes quick arm speed and aptitude. |
Erik Schneider RHP / C / Pope John Paul II, LA / 2021Average 5-foot-9, 170-pound frame with present strength in build. Right-handed pitcher with deception. Slow, deliberate delivery with acceleration after hand break. Works from the first base side of the rubber striding toward the right-handed batters box with cross fire action creating deception. Medium arm action with quick arm into a high-¾ release. Flashed the ability to vary arm slot and remain around the zone with a two-pitch mix from both slots. Used a fastball and curveball from a high-¾ slot while showing a fastball and slider mix from a low-¾ slot. Showed average command of entire arsenal. Fastball was a little straight with tilt from high-¾ slot but showed some arm side action from ¾ both in the 79-81 mph range.Curveball had 11/5 shape with solid depth at 63-66 mph while the slider was more east to west at 67-72 mph. |
Caleb Travis LHP / Silliman, LA / 2022Long, projectable 6-foot-3, 185-pound frame. Left-handed pitcher works from a simple, in-line delivery. Longer arm action into a high-¾ slot with solid arm speed and moderate effort. Showed average fastball command at 73-75 mph with solid arm side run. Breaking ball flashed rolling break with 1/7 shape at 64-65 mph. Flashed a nice changeup at 67-68 mph with arm side fade. |
Cameron Weiss RHP / 3B / Slidell, LA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 62 / POS: 11
Strong, physical 6-foot-3, 220-pound frame, mature with present strength in build. Physical right-handed pitcher with big mound presence, slight cross-fire delivery creating a tough angle for right-handed hitters. Showed solid command of a heavy, downhill fastball that ranged from 81-86 mph. Secondary pitches are coming along. Showed solid spin on the breaking ball at 65-70 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual break. Changeup shows flashes of an out pitch at 70-74 mph with solid, late fade. Change is a little ahead of the breaking ball as it plays better off of the heavy fastball. |
Dalton Wilson OF / RHP / Catholic(BR), LA / 2022Rankings StateRank: 46 / POS: 15
Athletic 6-foot, 170-pound frame. Right-handed pitcher with an athletic, simple in-line delivery. Long, loose arm action into a high-¾ slot with quick arm speed. Creates deception with a slight crossfire delivery and a quick arm, creating the illusion of the ball getting on hitters quickly. Pitch with the fastball in game. Fastball was commanded to both sides of the plate and located to all quadrants of the zone at 80-83 mph. Generated some swings and misses with the fastball and lots of soft contact. Showed a rolling breaking ball in warmups. |
