Prospect Q&A: Alexandria Senior HS RHP Matthew Beck
August 18, 2015
Name: Matthew Beck
School: Alexandria Senior
Position: RHP
Commitment: Louisiana State
Scouting Report:
A 6-foot-5, 200-pound righty, Beck is long, lean and projectable. He has a fast, clean arm action from a mid-3/4 release with effort. His fastball sits 86-89, touching 90, with good angle. His breaking ball is inconsistent at times, but it shows depth, spin, late break, and projects to get better.
PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process?
Beck: I really didn't know what to expect. I had heard so many different things so it was kind of a guessing game
PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
Beck: Baton Rouge isn't a bad trip for me at all so I mean it helps that it works out that way.
PBR: Where did the college you chose first see you? How did your relationship develop with them?
Beck: I originally went as a sophomore on our first visit and we'd stayed in contact ever since.
PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state, and why?
Beck: Tremaine Spears and Josh Smith. Those guys are something special at the plate. They've got a knack for hitting and it just comes natural.
PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were an elite player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
Beck: I realized I could be special my sophomore year. I knew that it wouldn't be given to me so it was a must for me to work hard to eventually reach my full potential.
PBR: What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Beck: I wanted somewhere my family and I felt comfortable and LSU is that place.
PBR: What is your best attribute as a baseball player and how does that transfer onto the field for your team?
Beck: I think being able to be a leader and having everyone see me on the mound with the confidence that we're going to win helps feed positive energy
PBR: What part of your game needs the biggest improvement, why, and what will you do to improve it?
Beck: Being able to be more consistent with my off speed and to continue developing my change-up which will come with the reps during the off season and regular season.
PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
Beck: To young players I would say to follow your dreams. Work hard and be a leader each and every day. The ability to work hard and pushing yourself and others will lead to positive things. And just to have fun playing the game because it can be over on any given day.
PBR: What do you do in the offseason to keep yourself in baseball shape and prepare for the upcoming season?
Beck: I actually play football during the fall so there's not much of an off season but when I do I give my arm as much time off as I can before having to get heated back up.
PBR: What do you like most about the college you committed to and what were the key factors in making your decision?
Beck: LSU is known for producing very good players and having a history of winning which is something I wanted to be a part of
PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?
Beck: Nicholls State, Tulane, and Louisiana Tech were some of the schools I was interested in before making my decision.
PBR: Preview your senior season for us. How do you feel your team will be? What are your expectations and goals?
Beck: We're returning a lot of guys with experience which happens to be seniors and we look to make a run at things for the state championship.
