Power 25 Team Rankings Updated

With district play of the 2016 season underway for much of the state, Prep Baseball Report Louisiana has updated its Power 25 team rankings.

Although the top five of the Power 25 remains intact, with the exception of some slight movement within it, there was significant movement with remainder of rankings. To see the updated Power 25, click HERE.

St. Thomas Aquinas HS and Brusly HS join Teurlings Catholic HS, as the only non-5A teams to crack the top ten of this edition of the Power 25. STA is led by senior Hunter Stanley, a Meridian CC commit, as well as 2018s Champ Artigues and Alex Egan. Brusly is led by senior Evan Daigle, a Northwestern State commit, and Southeastern Louisiana commit, Connor Manola.

Erath HS makes its first appearance in the Power 25 after an impressive 15 and 4 start.

The race to the state playoffs, and eventually the state championship, are well underway. Today we will take a deeper look at some teams to watch within class 5A.

As is usually case, class 5A is wide-open. There are dozens of talented, well-coached teams and there will undoubtedly be some surprising events taking place as playoff season rolls around. The usual powers like Barbe HS, Catholic(BR) HS and Brother Martin HS are once again good, and will be difficult beats. All three clubs reached the semi-finals last year and return numerous contributors.

Keep an eye on Destrehan HS, as the Wildcats are blessed with an abundance of high-level pitching. In a 3-game set, it will be tough for anyone to match their starting pitching with Sophomores Landon Marceaux, an LSU commit, and Bryce Scioneaux, in addition to senior LHP Cole Martin, a Southeastern Louisiana commit. If the starting pitching wasn’t enough, the Wildcats run out multiple, quality mid-80s arms out of the bullpen. The offense has started to click recently, and they are more than capable of scoring enough runs to win ballgames.

On the other end of spectrum, a couple of dark horse teams out of the historic Catholic League have gotten off to solid starts in district play. John Curtis HS is led by two-way standout and LSU commit, Daniel Cabrera. The Patriots are solid throughout their lineup with quality hitters like 2018s Jay Curtis and Jordin LaBruzza, but Cabrera is a rare talent that can take over a game, both offensively and on the mound, as he did last year in the semi-finals when John Curtis eventually took home the 3A state championship.

Although they have gotten off to an up and down start, Holy Cross HS could be a dangerous team down the stretch. They are a veteran club that is extremely athletic throughout the lineup, and once they get going offensively they are tough to stop, as they can attack you in a bunch of different ways.

As history has shown us, highly seeded teams enter the class 5A playoffs and are “upset” by a lower seed in 1st round. Often times, those lower seeds had a dominant ace. This year is shaping up to be no different. For instance, if the playoffs began tomorrow, Airline HS would enter as the 5 seed and would get matched up with St. Amant HS and LSU commit, Blayne Enlow.

Lafayette HS would enter as the 1 seed, and lurking right near the 32 seed is Alexandria HS, with 6-foot-8 right-hander and LSU signee, Matthew Beck.
