Future Games Recap: Louisiana Left-Handed Pitchers

PBR Louisiana Staff
PBR Louisiana

Team Louisiana's 2019 PBR Future Games experience was a great one, as the 2019 group finished the weekend 2-1 with wins over Texas and Arkansas/Kansas. Players up and down the roster made noise and impressions on the hundreds of college coaches in attendance at the event. Over the next few days, Louisiana Scouting Director Trey Sofio and Louisiana Assistant Scouting Director Walt Jones will recap Team Louisiana’s weekend with notes and observations from the prospects in attendance, broken down by position group.

Over the past few days our scouting staff has looked at prospects from the Future Games, broken down by position group.

Today our scouting staff breaks down the three left-handed pitchers that represented the state of Louisiana in Atlanta at the annual mega-event.

Below are reports on the three from the weekend:

Haydan Toal LHP / 1B / Tioga, LA / 2022

Athletic 6-foot, 165-pound frame, strong build, room to add strength. Athletic, slightly rotational delivery, short arm action into high-¾ release, quick arm speed, minimal effort, hides release point well with strong front side, and creates deception. Pitched 82-84 mph with fastball, showed slight arm-side run, strike thrower, uses both sides of plate. Showed solid feel for breaking ball, tight rotation with solid 2/8 shape at 69-72 mph, steals strikes and creates soft contact with it, not a true swing-and-miss pitch at this stage yet. Showed advanced feel for changeup at 76-79 mph, maintained fastball arm speed, consistent slot, deceptive with late fade action, induced bad swings and weak contact.

Dwayne (DJ) Primeaux LHP / OF / Central, LA / 2022

Average 5-foot-9, 165-pound frame with room for physical development. Athletic delivery, smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction. Medium arm action into high-¾ release with quick arm speed and little effort. Strike thrower that competes with advanced feel to pitch. Pitched 81-85 mph with fastball, life to the arm side, commands the ball to both sides of the plate, attacked hitters in the strike zone. Showed feel for breaking ball with 2/8 shape at 71-73 mph. Threw it for strikes, flashed swing-and-miss at times, spins tightly with late break, and fastball arm speed.

Gavin Leblanc LHP / OF / Iota, LA / 2021

Long 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame, projection to an athletic, lean build. Frame is beginning to fill out, strong lower half, wide, broad shoulders that can hold added strength. Athletic, on-line delivery with low effort. Easy, medium arm action into high ¾ arm slot, hides the baseball well, creates deception working downhill with steep tilt. Pitched 81-85 mph with fastball, showed above average command of the zone. Fastball has steep plane with arm-side run and late life. Attacked hitters in the strike zone, pitched to both sides of the plate. Showed advanced feel for breaking ball at 67-69 mph. Spins tightly with 1/7 shape, showed solid depth to it, flashed ability to back-door and back-foot to right-handed hitters. Changeup is a developing pitch, shows feel with deception at 66-68 mph but occasionally backs off of it.
