Today Prep Baseball Report Louisiana announces the first rendition of its class of 2020 rankings. It is still extremely early, perhaps even premature, to be forecasting Class of 2020 prospects, especially since these freshmen have just begun to play their first high school innings. Then again, with the recent acceleration of recruiting, high-level 2020 prospects are already pledging their commitments to schools.
The list will undoubtedly see major shifts and additions in the coming months and years, but for now, the initial rendition features twenty young prospects.
SS Blake Shapen (Evangel) checks in at No. 1 in the first rendition of the 2020 rankings, as the young infielder has already created significant buzz in the recruiting world. An athletic 6-foot, 165-pound frame with a strong build, and plenty of room for projection; Shapen has already shown early in his career the potential to turn into a premium middle-of-the-field defender. Offensively, he shows a simple, repeatable right-handed stroke with present bat speed, strength at contact, and a obvious feel to put the barrel on the baseball. In addition, Shapen could expect significant recruitment as a highly touted quarterback in football.
Louisiana-Lafayette recruit, LHP Dylan Carmouche (University Lab) checks in at No. 2, and is the lone player in this list to have already made his college pledge. An athletic 6-foot-5 left-hander, Carmouche has already made his mark in high school baseball, pitching significant innings for the University Lab varsity club.
IF/RHP Davis Meche (Barbe) checks in at No. 3 on our list, after the young infielder stood out at this past January’s I-10 Border Battle, in addition to seeing early playing time for the veteran heavy, and perennial state power Barbe Bucs. Defenisvely, Meche shows polish to his game with fluid footwork, soft hands, and overall feel for infield play. A switch-hitter, he hits from a balanced, athletic setup with a short stride, smooth load, and a short, direct path to the baseball with solid bat speed. Joining Meche near the top of the 2020 rankings is Barbe teammate, OF/LHP Brody Drost who checks in at No.4.
1B/OF Tre’ Morgan (Brother Martin) rounds out the top five of the first release of the class of 2020 rankings, after standout performances at last December’s Offensive Showcase, in addition to a stellar freshman campaign with the Brother Martin Crusaders. During the spring, Morgan consistently showed an ability to put the barrel on the baseball, even flashing power potential on occasion. A left-handed hitter, Morgan hits from a balanced, athletic setup with his hands held high with a line-drive approach and present bat speed.
