5 Star Org Day: Statistical Leaders

Brandon Hall
Executive Director, PBR of NC

On Sunday June 7th, PBR Scouts were in attendance for the 5 Star Organizaitonal workout at The Athletic Barn in Waxhaw, NC.  The Athletic Barn is a beautiful facility that allowed 5 Star to keep their players spread out, while running close to 200 players through the workout.  Beginning at 9am, the day concluded at 5pm.

PBR Scouts ran TrackMan for 85 bullpens, collecting data on the arms in the 5 Star Carolina program.  Scouts were also able to see position players workout from their respective positions and take some swings in the cages.  Off-site, 5 Star catchers were able to throw pop times for PBR scouts while position players ran a 60 on the laser timers.  Below are some of the statistical leaders from the entire day.

5 Star Carolina Org Day

THE 60 YARD DASH

Archie Dean Herring led all runners in the 5 Star Carolina family.  The Stanford commit has a plus tool in his bag and makes him one of the top leadoff hitters in the country.  In total 115 players ran on the laser timed course with 10 running sub-7.00 and 23 under the 7.20 mark.

EXIT VELOCITY (OFF A TEE)

126 players worked their way through BP.  Eleven players flashed high level strength with an exit velocity of 90mph or higher.  40 players worked at 85 mph or better off the barrel.

POSITIONAL VELOCITY - Inf & OF

In an effort to stay efficient and safe throughout the day, infielders and outfielders were able to test their arm strength in a velocity throw.  The throws simulated that from an outfield with momentum and a crow-hop, throwing into a net a few yards away.  While this throw does not give us all of the information needed, it does give a look at pure arm strength of a position player.

CATCHER POP TIMES & POSITIONAL VELOCITY

Catchers traveled away from The Athletic Barn to get their positional throwing done.  PBR was on hand to measure pop time and a positional velocity, out of the crouch on the 20 catchers that participated.  Scouts were on hand to make sure the catchers were working out of their stance, at the right distance, and showing some feel for accuracy.

MAX FASTBALL

Pitchers threw a controlled bullpen for PBR Scouts with TrackMan's portable B1 Unit recording velocities, spin rates, control, angles, tilts, breaks, and more.  Below are the top fastball from the 85 arms that threw on the day.
