2024 Team Preview: South Beauregard High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the bayou state.  Each week, we will be releasing our players of the week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, and many more pieces of content.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

South Beauregard finished last season with an impressive 28-7 overall record, which earned them the #2 seed in the LHSAA Non-Select D-III playoffs.  The Golden Knights rolled through the first three rounds of the playoffs to make the LHSAA state tournament, where they matched up with #3 seed Doyle.  In what turned out to be a fantastic pitcher's duel, Doyle ended up beating South Beauregard, by a score of 3-1.  Expectations are high for Head Coach Jeremy Deville and company this season, as the Golden Knights return eight position players and five pitchers from last year.  The biggest returner for Coach Deville is definitely senior ace RHP Jace Duhon.  The University of Louisiana-Monroe recruit was one of the state's best arms last season, after posting a 10-3 record and 0.95 ERA to go along with a whopping 134 K's.  Duhon has gained strength over the off-season and it's paying dividends, as Coach Deville told us that he was up to 90 mph this past fall, which is a nice uptick for the right-hander.  Junior LHP Clayton Folks is back for another season as well, after posting a 5-2 record with a 1.20 ERA last year.  The southpaw owns a mid-80's FB to go along with a sharp, late-breaking SL.  Senior LHP Cole Eaves, a Southeast Arkansas CC recruit, went 3-1 last year with a 1.80 ERA and gives the team another left-handed option.  Senior RHP Brycen Dartez is also back after posting a 2-1 record with 3 saves and a 1.50 ERA across 20 IP last season.  Senior Brayden Croxdale figures to see innings on the mound this spring as well, and will offer hitters a different look with a submarine-style release.  Junior Christian Wold and sophomore Jed Henry should also see meaningful innings on the mound for the Golden Knights as well.  This year's offense will be led by seniors Layden Sepulvado and Gunner Courtney.  Sepulvado hit at a .370 clip with 44 RBI's and is a real threat on the bases, as he swiped 26 bags in 2023.  Courtney is a three-year starter at shortstop who scored 30 runs last year and also stole 30 bases.  The Golden Knights also return five big sticks from their junior class this season.  Junior Luke Brister hit at a .350 clip last year with 20 R and 25 RBI.  Junior Luke Fontenot will be the team's starting catcher this season, after splitting duties with departed senior Carter Caraway last year.  Fontenot is an excellent defensive catcher with a sub 2.00 pop time.  Junior Claton Folks drove in 26 runs last year with a .310 average.  Junior Cy Barrow hit at a .346 clip, while scoring 31 R, and junior Noah Fontenot finished the year with a .297 avg. and 20 RBI's.  The Golden Knights have all the right pieces in place to have one of their best seasons in school history in 2024, and if they can stick to their goal of "playing for each other", then they just might hold up a state championship trophy later this spring.
