The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our popular Game of the Week segment.

Team Outlook

Head Coach Jeremy Trahan has built quite the program in Maurice, LA, as the Patriots are contenders year in and year out and 2023 was no different.  Last year's North Vermilion squad finished with a 26-9 overall record and made it to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs, where they fell at the hands of Iowa, who ended up winning the Non-Select DII State Title.  Coach Trahan and company have their work cut out for them in 2024, as the Patriots return only one starting position player and three pitchers from a season ago.  The good news is that their lone returning starting position player is senior catcher Cody Breaux.  The Coastal Alabama CC signee is an uber-athletic backstop who hit .347 with 15 RBI and 23 SB last year.  Junior Jansen DeAngelo will be a first year starter for the Patriots in centerfield and Coach Trahan told us that he is the fastest player that he's ever coached, as he's recorded sub-6.50 60 times.  Another first year starter that Coach Trahan is excited about is senior Colt LeJeune, who will take over at shortstop this season, after being used mainly as a reliever last year.  Sophomore 1B Blaze Duhon and sophomore OF Alexander Landry are two underclassmen to keep an eye on as well.  The pitching staff figures to be a strength of this year's club with Duhon being one of the top returning arms.  The sophomore southpaw has an XL 6'4" 180 lbs. frame with long limbs and a three-pitch mix that includes an 80-83 mph FB.  Duhon was solid during his freshman campaign by going 5-3 with a 2.51 ERA and 40 K's across 36 1/3 IP.  Junior RHP Isaac Russell was the top relief option last year for Coach Trahan posting a 3-0 record with 2 saves across 21 IP and a 2.67 ERA.  He figures to move into a starter role this year for the Patriots.  As we mentioned above, Coach Trahan has built a really good foundation at North Vermilion and with last year's quarterfinal series loss fresh on everyone's minds, we expect the Patriots to come out motivated and hungry in 2024, as they look to return to Sulphur, LA for the LHSAA state tournament.
