Paul Miller, a 5-foot-11, 165-pound SS/RHP from Collins HS, appears to be hitting his stride as a baseball player.
Miller’s numbers last spring at Collins certainly don’t jump off the page. In 52 AB’s he hit .250 with five doubles while showing the ability to consistently put the ball in play with just 5 strikeouts.
Fast forward to August.
Miller arrived at our Unsigned Senior Games event at Northern Kentucky University as virtually an unknown player to us, but left with a solid showing. Defensively, Miller showed soft hands and a loose arm at 80 mph across the infield. He showed a sound approach at the plate in going 2-for-5 with a double deep down the left field line in game action.
A little more than two months later we saw Miller again at the Fall Prospect Program stop at the University of Kentucky. Again, he was solid defensively, and his velocity across the infield showed a jump to 83 mph. But it was what he did offensively that stole the show.
Miller went 6-for-6 in the double-header with 2 doubles and 4 RBI’s. There wasn’t a cheap hit among the six, and what I liked most was his ability to make hard contact to all parts of the field. The right-handed hitter hit both gaps with his two doubles and collected two singles to left, one up the middle, and one to right.
Miller looks like one of those classic late-bloomer type players to me. It will be interesting to see how his success in the fall carries over to the field this spring.
