The PBR Kentucky Unsigned Senior Games event took place at Northern Kentucky University on August 8 and provided close to 50 unsigned seniors the opportunity to showcase their abilities to the PBR Kentucky staff and several college coaches in attendance.
Complete stats for all players were posted following the event. CLICK HERE to view that information.
The following is a look at the Team Navy pitchers who participated in the event. This is pitcher analysis only. Those pitchers who also participated as a position player had that performance featured in a previous article.
Jeffrey Purnell, RHP, Boone County HS, 2016
6-foot-3, 190-pound RHP is one of the top uncommitted 2016 arms in KY. Works through a high-3/4 slot with shorter arm action, arm is quick, has some effort in delivery, fastball sat 86-87 mph with good arm-side run and sink, 71-72 mph curveball is sharp with 11/5 action and thrown for strikes, also showed a harder 77 mph slider with late bite, pitched two perfect innings while striking out three batters (all on FB’s). Purnell’s 86-87 fastball through his two innings of work represented the most consistent velocity seen to date.
Erik Cecil, RHP, Trinity HS, 2016
6-foot-1, 223-pound RHP works through a ¾ slot with long arm action, regular effort tin delivery, showed more velocity than event just a week prior, fastball sat 84-87 mph touching 88 on one occasion with some arm-side run, throws a slurvy type breaking ball at 68-72 mph, 75-77 mph changeup is thrown with good arm action with solid sink and fade, had an impressive outing allowing one hit and striking out four (all on FB’s) in his two inning outing. Cecil committed to Kentucky Wesleyan following the event.
Josh Floyd, RHP, Warren Central HS, 2016
6-foot-4, 187-pound RHP has not shown the velocity this summer that he showed in February, works through a high-3/4 slot with long arm action, good tempo in delivery, fastball sat 82-84 mph with some arm-side run, showed limited feel for 70-73 mph curveball, allowed one hit and struck out the side in his first inning of work (all on FB’s), struck out two more on fastballs while allowing two hits and walking one in the second inning. Floyd has as much upside as any uncommitted 2016 arm in KY but has shown inconsistent velocity and feel for secondary stuff at times.
Aaron Miley, RHP, Lexington Christian Academy, 2016
6-foot-1, 190-pound RHP works through a ¾ to high-3/4 slot with long arm action, minimal effort in delivery, works quickly and pounds the strike zone with the fastball, fastball sat 79-82mph topping at 83 with some arm-side run and sink, tended to get under his 63-65 mph curveball on this occasion leaving it up, allowed two infield hits, walked one, and struck out three (all swinging on FB’s) in his two innings of work. Miley has shown a recent increase in velocity and topped at 84 earlier this summer.
Gus Garrison, LHP, Harrison County HS, 2016
5-foot-11, 140-pound LHP works through a high-3/4 slot with shorter arm action and regular effort in delivery, good lower half direction, shows good pitchability, fastball sat 77-78 mph topping at 79 and showed some cutting action, shows feel for the 67-69 mph curveball with the ability to throw it for strikes on any count, curveball varied between 12/6 and 1/7 action with good depth, has a solid idea of how to attack hitters, allowed one hit and struck out four (3 on CB’s) in two scoreless innings of work. Solid lefty with potential for additional velocity.
Nick McKinney, RHP/2B, Oldham County HS, 2016
5-foot-9, 135-pound RHP works through a high-3/4 slot with medium back side arm action, regular effort in delivery, works slightly across body at times, fastball sat 78-81 mph topping at 82 with occasional arm-side run, showed a 61-62 mph curveball with gradual 11/5 action, allowed five hits including a home run, hit a batter, and struck out two (both swinging on FB’s) in his two innings of work.
Sam Clinard, 1B/RHP, DuPont Manual HS, 2016
6-foot-2, 175-pound RHP has shown an increase in velocity since last summer, woks through a high-3/4 slot with shorter arm action, lands square to the plate, fastball sat 78-79 mph with occasional arm-side run, 64-65 mph curveball showed 11/5 action with some depth, allowed one hit and walked one in his one inning of work.
Michael Simmons, LHP, Lafayette HS, 2016
6-foot-1, 165-pound LHP works through a high-3/4 slot with shorter arm action, minimal effort in delivery, throws strikes consistently, hits spots well with the fastball, fastball sat 71-73 mph mostly straight, throws a slow curveball at 60-61 mph with gradual 1/7 action, allowed three hits and struck out one in his two innings of work.
Tanner Maple, RHP, Greenwood HS, 2016
5-foot-11, 180-pound RHP works through a ¾ slot with medium backside arm action, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 73-75 mph with occasional arm-side run, 63-64 mph curveball showed gradual 11/5 action, showed much better command than previous event, allowed two hits, hit a batter, and struck out one (looking on FB) in his two innings of work.
Jonathan Frommeyer, SS/RHP, Conner HS, 2016
5-foot-8, 130-pound RHP works through a high-3/4 slot with long arm action and regular effort, lands square to the plate, threw strictly a fastball in game action, fastball sat 73-75 mph with four seam fastball showing occasional cutting action and two seam fastball showing good arm-side run, threw a hitless inning striking out two and walking one.
