Unsigned Senior Games: Outfield Analysis

The Unsigned Senior Games at Northern Kentucky University August 10-11 saw some impressive performances from the outfield group.  The group had a little bit of everything, from good arm strength to good speed to some power thrown in for good measure. 

The following is an in depth look at the outfield group from the Unsigned Senior Games Event.

Top Prospects

Mason Forbes, OF, Ryle HS, R/R, Ryle HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 167-pound prospect, room to fill on frame, moves well in outfield, athletic actions, showed increased arm strength at 87 mph with carry.  At the plate, hits from open setup, explosive use of lower half generates barrel whip, shows ability to drive the ball to all fields, flashed bat speed with 90 mph tee exit velocity, ran 4.66 down the line (slow getting out of box), participated both days going 3-for-8 with two doubles and was robbed of two other hits, makes consistent hard contact, impressive hitter with good pop.

Griffin Neuer, OF/RHP, L/R, Lexington Catholic HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 170 pound prospect, lean and athletic frame with room to fill, good projectability, athletic outfield actions, moves well and takes good routes, showed increase in arm strength from previous event at 87 mph with on-line carry.  At the plate, the left-handed hitter from a balanced setup, good rhythm, short stride, gap to gap approach with occasional pull pop, consistently squared up the baseball in batting practice, shows bat speed with 91 mph tee exit velocity (+3 from previous event), ran event best 4.21 down the line, went 3-for-4 in game action showing the speed part of his game with two infield hits and sharp single to right, good potential on mound (featured in pitcher write-ups).

Quenton Brownlee, OF/RHP, R/R, Franklin County HS, 2014
5-foot-11, 185-pound prospect, strong build with good athleticism, clean transfer with a quick exchange, plays through the ball very well, 86 mph arm strength with on-line carry.  At the plate, hits from a balanced setup, short stride, hands show quickness, good use of strong lower half generates barrel whip, flashed very good bat speed with 93 mph tee exit velocity (+6 from previous event), power potential, went 1-for-4 in game play that included a well hit, long line drive out to center field, runs well 4.29 down the line, also pitches (featured in pitcher write-ups), prospect with athletic tools.

Noah Sadler, OF/LHP, L/L, Mukwonago HS (WI), 2014
6-foot, 170 pound prospect, athletic build, shows athletic actions in outfield, plays through the ball, throws show on-line carry at 84 mph.  At the plate, the left-handed hitter hits from an open stance, uses a leg kick trigger, good rhythm in swing, line drive type hitter, generates good bat speed, 88ph tee exit velocity, ran 4.68 down the line, showed a pull approach in game play going 0-for-4 with 3 ground balls to first base, solid potential on mound (featured in pitcher write-ups), interesting two-way prospect.

Jeremy Downs, OF, R/R, Ryle HS, 2014
5-foot-9, 155-pound prospect, shows athletic outfield actions, moves well with good routes, sets up well on fly balls, plays through the ball well, continues to show improved arm strength, event best 89 mph from the outfield with carry.  At the plate, has shown big increase in bat speed, hits from open setup, long stride, line drive type hitter with gap to gap approach, 86 mph tee exit velocity (+6 from previous event), ran 4.51 down the line, went 1-for-5 in game action with a triple to deep center field, also pitched (featured in pitcher write-ups).

Sam Springer, OF, R/R, St. Xavier HS, 2014
6-foot, 160-pound prospect, shows athleticism, plays through the ball, arm strength at 84 mph (+4 increase from previous event) with on-line carry.  At the plate, hits from a balanced setup, short stride, hands show some quickness, line drive type hitter, had good round of BP consistently finding the barrel with line drives to all fields, showed improved bat speed with 86 mph tee exit velocity (+6), ran 4.40 down the line, went 0-for-5 in game action with 2 K’s, athletic prospect.

Jacob Baumann, OF/C, R/R, Bishop Brossart HS, 2014
6-foot, 170-pound prospect, room for added strength to frame, plays through the ball, short arm action from outfield at 81 mph, also participated as catcher showing 75 mph arm strength from the crouch, room for quicker transfer and release, pop times ranged 2.00-2.12.  At the plate, hits from a balanced setup, short stride, swing would benefit from more consistent lower half torque and backside turn, went 0-for-3 in game action with 2 K’s, 84 mph tee exit velocity, ran 4.94 down the line.

Austin Berleman, OF, R/R, Lakota West HS, 2014
5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect, takes good routes to the ball, sets up well on fly balls, plays through the ball, 79 mph arm strength with some on-line carry.  At the plate, hits from a wide base, short stride, long swing path, mid-field approach, average bat speed, 81 mph tee exit velocity, ran 4.93 down the line, went 0-for-5 in game play with 3 K’s.

William Hislope, OF, R/R, Somerset HS, 2014
5-foot-10, 189-pound prospect, plays through the ball, arm strength at 72 mph.  At the plate, hits from an open setup, short stride, long swing path, average bat speed, shows mid-field approach, registered 82 mph tee exit velocity, ran 4.97 down the line, went 1-for-4 in game play with line drive single to left-center.

Nolan May, RHP/OF, R/R,Trinity HS, 2014
5-foot-11, 165-pound prospect, room to fill on frame and add strength, plays through the ball, 83 mph arm strength from the outfield.  At the plate, hits from a balanced setup, short stride, has an uphill path to the ball, shows occasional pull-side pop, showed some bat speed with 86 mph tee exit velocity (+4 from winter event), ran 4.78 down the line, also pitches (featured in pitcher write-ups.)

Jacob Smiley, LHP/OF, L/L, South Warren HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 182-pound prospect, plays through the ball well, clean transfer, uses short arm action at 79 mph, made very impressive catch in center field in game play with his back to the plate on a well hit ball directly over his head.  At the plate, hits from an open setup, short stride, line drive swing plane, showed some bat speed with 85 mph tee exit velocity, ran 4.47 down the line, went 0-for-4 in game play with middle of the field approach, also pitches (featured in pitcher write-ups).
