On July 22-23, a total of 100 players from the Classes of 2016, 2017, and 2018 convened at the University of Kentucky and Bryan Station High School for the 2nd Annual Kentucky Underclass Games Event. The following is a look at the pitchers from Team Carbon. This is pitching analysis only. Those players who also played a position at the event will have their position player analysis featured in a subsequent article.
Eastern HS LHP Gavin Sullivan showed the top velocity of the group with a fastball that topped at 84 mph and in the process established himself as one of the top young left-handers in the state. Sullivan earned an invitation to the PBR Future Games, and a week later ran his fastball up to 87 at the event.
Here is a look at all pitchers from Team Carbon.
Gavin Sullivan, LHP, Eastern HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect is one of the top young left-handed pitching prospects in the state, uses long arm action and works through a high ¾ slot, fastball mostly straight and sat 82-84 mph (topped at 87 a week later at Future Games), showed a curveball with 2/8 action at 65-66 mph that he registered two back-foot strikeouts with to right-handed hitters, throws a 74-76 mph changeup with good arm speed that tended to be up in the zone, attacks hitters well, high-level potential.
Eddie Satisky, 3B/RHP, Lafayette HS, 2017
6-foot, 180-pound prospect uses long arm action through a low ¾ to ¾ arm slot, fastball sat 78-81 touching 82 with some arm-side run, curveball has tight spin and 10/4 action at 63-64 mph, recorded a strikeout on back heel curveball to left-handed hitter, throws a 69 mph changeup with good sink and fade, interesting prospect on mound, high follow in 2017 class.
Hunter Wright, SS/RHP, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 140-pound prospect uses long arm action through a high 3/4 arm slot, arm is loose and quick, pounds the strike zone with all pitches, fastball sat 78-80, touched 82, showed a hard curveball for age at 69-73 mph with 11/5 action, impressive performance, has potential to be a high-level arm, high follow in 2017 class.
Mason Vinyard, 2B/RHP, St, Mary HS, 2017
6-foot-2, 170-pound prospect with projectable frame, uses long arm action through a high ¾ slot, delivery requires minimal effort, loose arm works freely and easily, fastball sat 75-78 mph touching 79, showed a 73-74 mph changeup, did not throw a breaking ball in his outing, high follow in 2017 class should be watched for additional velocity gains.
Jaxson Blair, 2B/RHP, Lexington Christian Academy, 2016
5-foot-11, 155-pound prospect, arm shows some quickness through a high ¾ arm slot, shows an easy and repeatable delivery, fastball is mostly straight and sat 77-79 mph touching 80, shows good command of 63-66 mph curveball with 11/5 action and some depth, has a plus changeup that shows significant sink and fade at 65-66 mph thrown with good arm action, good bloodlines (father Willie pitched at major league level, brother Taylor is sophomore at Eastern Kentucky), good upside.
Nolan Johnson, LHP/1B, Daviess County HS, 2017
6-foot, 150-pound prospect continues to show an increase in velocity at each event, uses medium arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, arm works easily, fastball sat 73-76 mph with occasional slight arm-side run, shows good command of his 59-64 mph curveball that displayed 1/7 action with some depth, good arm action on 65 mph changeup, pounds the strike zone with all three pitches, expect to see continued velocity gains.
Noah Goff, RHP, Daviess County HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 190-pound prospect uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, lower half stays online, repeats delivery well, fastball is mostly straight at 75-77 mph, 66-69 mph curveball showed sharper 11/5 action in the second inning of his outing, consistently throws strikes with both pitches, good upside, arm works, potential to add significant velocity in the near future.
Andrew Parker, RHP/1B, Eastern HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect uses medium arm action through an over the top arm slot, fastball works on downward plane and sat 74-76 mph, touched 77 once, shows 63-64 mph curveball with gradual 12/6 action, curveball will improve with more consistent release point out front, should continue to develop more velocity and secondary pitches.
Nathan Henry, RHP/SS, Lexington Christian Academy, 2017
6-foot, 160-pound prospect works through a ¾ arm slot, shows the ability to consistently throw strikes, didn’t allow a base runner in two innings of work, fastball sat 75-77 mph with occasional arm-side run, showed a 61-63 mph curveball with 11/5 action that should continue to develop.
Lofton Pigg, 1B/LHP, Calloway County, 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect uses long arm action through a high ¾ arm slot, easy effort in delivery, fastball shows occasional cutting action at 72-75 mph, touched 76 once, showed a 62 mph curveball with gradual 12/6 action, struggled some with command in his two innings of work, young prospect with athletic frame and upside.
