Scouting Report

9/17/17 - Athletically built and strong at 6-foot-1, 163 pounds. A switch-hitter, he helped lead the Giants Scout Team to the championship in the upper class division. He hit balls extremely hard from both sides of the plate all weekend. He has a knack for finding the barrel with a gap-to-gap approach, which should develop into power at the next level. He hit a ground-rule double into the left-center gap in his first at-bat of the championship game and later smoked a line drive that ate up the first baseman. Defensively, he has fluid actions at shortstop and is a steady defender with a clean release that produce accurate throws with carry.

9/15/17 - Cincinnati recruit, showcases advanced actions in the field. At 6-foot-1, 163-pounds, Hughes has twitchy athleticism that allows him to get to nearly all balls with ease. He has a quick release and the ability to make throws from all angles. His first step and overall baseball IQ make him one of the better infielders in the 2018 class.

7/16/18 - 6-foot, 160-pound athletic, projectable body frame. The infielder has made his commitment to the University of Cincinnati and is ranked No. 3 overall and the No. 1 shortstop overall in Kentucky’s class of ‘18. Ran a 6.75 60-yard dash his first time and a 6.90 on his second attempt, either way he offers speed. Defensively he has good footwork, while playing through the baseball and fields with his hands out in front of his body. He can also throw from different arm slots when needed. A true switch hitter who has similar mechanics from both sides of the plate. Starts from a balanced stance using a little leg kick for added power. Hands get to a good launch position before finishing his swing with a two-handed follow through. Although he showed strength from both sides of the plate he showed a little more from the left side during his round of batting practice after hitting a homerun over the right field wall and banging another one off the fence in right field. Showed the ability to use both sides of the field on the right side and had a little bit more of a tendency to want to pull the ball from the left side.

6/2/15 - Hughes is a swicth-hitting SS who impressed at the State Tournament with his all-around game. He shows good speed on the base paths and is solid defensively with a line drive approach and ability to make hard contact to all fields.
