Preseason All-State Showcase: Class of 2017 Pitchers

On Saturday, February 14, more than 100 players from all corners of the state convened at Champions Baseball Academy in Nicholasville for the third annual Preseason All-State Showcase. We wrap up our analysis of the players in attendance over the next few days with a look at the pitchers who participated in the event.

Below we take a look at the Class of 2017 pitchers who were in attendance. This is pitcher analysis only. Those players who also participated as a position player at the event had their position player performance featured in a previous article.

Will Moriarty, RHP/1B, South Oldham HS, 2017
6-foot-4, 185-pound, highly projectable RHP with ideal frame, continues to show increase in velocity at each event he attends, uses long arm action and works through a high-3/4 slot, repeats delivery well with minimal effort, fastball was mostly straight at 82-84 mph, shows good command of 70-71 mph curveball that varied between sharp 11/5 and 12/6 action with good depth, also throws a 72-74 mph slider with short/late break, 74-76 mph changeup shows good fade when he stays behind it, expect to see more velocity to come for the projectable right-hander.

Eddie Satisky, RHP/3B, Lafayette HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound RHP shows big potential on the mound and showed a jump in velocity since last summer. Arm works through a ¾ slot that produces good arm-side run on his fastball, fastball sat 81-84 mph topping at 85 on one occasion, occasionally has trouble commanding the run on his fastball, shows some feel for 64-67 mph curveball with 10/4 action that has some sweeping depth, throws a 73-75 mph changeup with good sink and fade through the zone, 2017 prospect who continues to get better and has a chance to develop into a high-level prospect on the mound.

Maddex Richardson, RHP, Owensboro Catholic HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 170-pound RHP with frame that projects well, arm is quick and works through a high-3/4 slot, good rhythm in delivery with regular effort, showed ability to throw strikes with all pitches, fastball sat 80-82 mph touching 83 and is mostly straight, showed a 69-72 mph curveball with solid 11/5 action, 76-79 mph changeup could use a bigger velocity difference off fastball but he throws it with good arm action and it shows very good sink and fade, changeup has potential to be a plus pitch at the next level, would expect to see additional velocity, 2017 RHP to keep a close eye on.

Trip Lockhart, RHP/SS, Lexington Catholic HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 155-pound RHP with lanky frame that projects well, has grown an inch and put on 10 pounds since the fall, works quickly with good tempo, medium backside arm action, works through a ¾ arm slot that produces some arm-side run on his 82-83 mph fastball, shows good command of 70-72 mph curveball with 11/5 action, 74-75 mph changeup is very good with good arm-side fade and sink, projects to add additional velocity as he fills out frame, has a chance to be a top 2017 prospect on the mound.

Luke Price, RHP/1B, CAL, 2017
6-foot-3, 205-pound RHP with large frame, uses long and loose arm action and works through a high-3/4 slot, fastball sat 78-81 mph topping at 83 on one occasion, showed an improved curveball from previous event at 64-67 mph with 11/5 action, showed better feel for curveball as bullpen progressed, showed a 70-74 mph changeup with some sink, continues to show velocity gains and improved secondary pitched with more velocity likely to come.

Brenden Bube, RHP/SS, Lanesville HS (IN), 2017
5-foot-9, 155-pound RHP showed a significant increase in velocity, uses long arm action and works through a ¾ arm slot, has some effort in delivery, fastball sat 80-82 mph topping at 84 on one occasion, arm slot produces some natural arm-side run on fastball, showed some feel for 69-74 mph curveball with tight spin and 11/5 action, 77-78 mph changeup is thrown with good arm action and shows some sink and arm-side fade, also showed a 64-65 mph knuckle ball, throws strikes consistently and has made impressive strides on the mound.

Reece Ison, 3B/RHP, Prestonsburg HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 165-pound RHP has shown a big increase in velocity over the last year. Uses long arm action through a high-3/4 slot, deliberate deliver with regular effort, fastball is straight and sat 79-83 mph, 66-70 mph curveball was inconsistent as he got around some leaving them flat, curveball shows 11/5 action when he stays on top, showed some feel for 71-73 mph changeup that is straight, also throws a 67 mph knuckleball with some dance through the zone, has shown a 5-8 mph increase in velocity from last winter.

Hunter Wright, RHP/SS, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 143-pound RHP uses long arm action through a high-3/4 slot, arm action is loose and clean, regular effort in delivery, good direction with lower half, fastball sat 78-80 mph touching 81 on one occasion, showed a hard curveball at 69-73 mph with sharp 11/5 action, throws a 70-73 mph changeup with good arm action, locates changeup consistently at the bottom of the strike zone with good deception off the fastball, should be watched for velocity gains as he adds to his frame.

Austin Shepherd, 3B/RHP, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 186-pound RHP has shown a jump in velocity since last summer. Uses long arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, arm shows some quickness and works well, good rhythm in delivery with online lower half, fastball sat 77-80 mph topping at 82 and is straight, throws 63-67 mph curveball for strikes that shows some depth and 11/5 action, slowed arm on 65-68 mph changeup (changeup was better at previous event) also shows a 74 mph slider with lateral action, has potential to continue to add velocity.

Braden Wyatt, C/RHP, Boyd County HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 155-pound RHP shows good arm quickness and works through a high-3/4 slot, arm action is loose and clean, deliberate delivery with regular effort, fastball sat 80-81 mph and is mainly straight, showed better feel for curveball in the back half of his bullpen session, curveball sat 70-73 mph with sharp 11/5 action when he didn’t get under it, 75-77 mph changeup is thrown with good arm speed and shows some sink and fade, has good arm strength and is a 2017 prospect to keep an eye on.

Jaren Lovely, OF/LHP, Magoffin County HS, 2017
6-foot, 160-pound LHP continues to add to frame and show an increase in velocity, uses long arm action through a high-3/4 slot, arm works well with clean action, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 77-79 mph and is mostly straight, shows good feel and command of 67-69 mph curveball with 1/7 action, 72-74 mph changeup is thrown with good arm speed and shows some cutting action, would like to see him stay behind the changeup more to develop sink and fade on the pitch, showed good command of all pitches consistently throwing them for strikes.

Nicolas Nelson, RHP/3B, Mason County HS, 2017
6-foot, 175-pound RHP uses long arm action and works through a high-3/4 slot, good lower half direction, shows ability to throw strikes with all three of his pitches, fastball shows slight arm-side run at 79-80 mph, throws a solid curveball with sharp 11/5 action at 69-70 mph and shows good feel for the pitch, curveball is best present secondary pitch, changeup shows good sink and fade when he stays behind it at 67-71 mph, shows cut action when he gets around it occasionally, has solid potential on the mound with additional velocity likely.

Clay Combs, 2B/RHP, Bryan Station HS, 2017
6-foot-, 145-pound RHP, frame projects well with significant room to add, uses long arm action through a high-3/4 slot, good tempo in delivery with regular effort, fastball sat 75-77 mph topping at 78 and showed some cutting action, shows good feel for a solid curveball at 68-69 mph with 11/5 action, 69-71 mph changeup is thrown with good arm action and shows some cut action as he tends to get around it, tended to bury changeup but should continue to develop more feel for the pitch, clean arm action with projectable frame should lead to more velocity.

Nathan Henry, RHP/SS, Lexington Christian Academy, 2017
6-foot, 160-pound RHP uses long arm action through a ¾ arm slot, easy effort in delivery, arm slot produces natural arm-side run on fastball, fastball showed an increase in velocity from last summer as fastball sat 76-78 mph touching 79, struggled to command curveball on this occasion as he tended to get under it leaving it up, curveball was 60-64 mph, changeup was his best secondary pitch of the bullpen session showing good arm-side fade and sink at 66-69 mph, projects for additional velocity as he continues to fill out frame.

Jacob Frankel, C/RHP, Waggener HS, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound RHP with lanky/athletic frame, uses long arm action and works through a high-¾ slot, fastball shows occasional arm-side run at 78-80 mph topping at 82, shows some feel for curveball that varied between 62-67 mph with 11/5 action, tends to get under 66-70 mph changeup that needs continued development, arm works and has potential on the mound to develop more velocity, continued development secondary pitches will bode well for him moving forward.

Rece Carter, LHP/1B, McCracken County HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 210-pound LHP uses long arm action through a high-3/4 slot, shows regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 76-78 mph with occasional cutting action, slows arm on curveball that showed gradual 1/7 action at 57-59 mph and he (showed harder curveball at previous event), 62-64 mph changeup shows some cutting action as he tends to get around it, also showed a 65-67 mph slider that is the better of the two breaking balls with sharper 1/7 action.

Jonathan Gillock, SS/RHP, Casey County HS, 2017
5-foot-9, 145-pound RHP uses long arm action with some stiffness and works through a low ¾ slot, fastball sat 66-68 mph with some occasional sinking action, tends to get under 58-61 mph curveball at times that shows gradual 11/5 action, 62-66 mph changeup is best present secondary pitch with some late sinking action through the zone.
