Kentucky Scouting Director
Jonah Kelsey, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound RHP/1B from Madison Central HS, recently committed to continue his education and baseball career at Indiana University Southeast. Kelsey, whose fastball reaches into the low 80's, had a solid junior season at Madison Central last spring. He hit .313 with 17 RBI's and is expected to take over as the starter at first base with the graduation of Ben Fisher (now a freshman at EKU). On the mound, Kelsey was 1-1 with a 3.50 ERA last spring with 19 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched.
We recently caught up with Kelsey to discuss his decision.
PBR: Why did you choose Indiana Southeast?
Kelsey: I felt like it was the right place for me. I have the opportunity to be a two way player as well.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Kelsey: Morehead St., Kentucky ST., Asbury, University of the Cumberland’s.
PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you compete?
Kelsey: At a showcase held at the IUSE complex.
PBR: What role does Coach Reel expect you to play during your first year on campus?
Kelsey: As a two way player and to compete for playing time as a freshman.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Kelsey: My father. He has pushed me and helped me become the player I am.
PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most exciting experience playing summer ball?
Kelsey: Elite Baseball club. My most exciting experience this summer was being able to play the Dulin Dodgers at the University of Louisville.
PBR: Madison Central spent a good part of the season in our Power 25 poll last season, but you lost some key players to graduation. What are your goals and expectations in the always tough 11th Region for your senior season?
Kelsey: To compete at a high level and hopefully be in position to win our first region title in 20 years.
PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you have faced in Kentucky?
Kelsey: All around Jimmy Wright in practice. Javon Shelby of Tates Creek during competition.
