The Class of 2017/2018 Fall Prospect Games took place at the University of Louisville on October 4 and included close to 60 players looking to establish themselves as some of the top young players in the state. Four of the seven pitchers for Team Navy topped at 80 mph or better, led by Eastern 2017 LHP Gavin Sullivan, a Louisville commit, at 86 mph
The following is a look at all Team Navy pitchers from the event. This is pitcher analysis only. Those players who also played a position at the event had their position player analysis featured in a previous article.
Gavin Sullivan, LHP, Eastern HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 192-pound prospect, strong and athletic frame, quick arm through a high ¾ slot, good rhythm in delivery, fastball sat 81-84 mph topping at 86, mostly straight, gets around curveball at times but it’s very good when he stays on top with sharp 1/7 action at 68-69 mph, allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out three in two innings of work, high-level prospect committed to Louisville this fall.
Will Moriarty, RHP/1B, South Oldham HS, 2017
6-foot-4, 175-pound prospect with long and lanky frame that projects well, uses long arm action through a high-3/4 slot, repeats delivery with minimal effort, good lower half direction, showed a significant increase in velocity since last winter as fastball sat 78-80 mph and topped at 81, fastball shows some arm-side run, curveball showed mostly 12/6 action at 64-69 mph with some depth, pounds the strike zone and can throw the curveball for strikes on any count, struck out three in two perfect innings of work, expect additional velocity gains as he continues to fill out his frame.
Jaxon Boley, RHP, LaRue County HS, 2018
6-foot-3, 190-pound prospect, strong/athletic frame with projection, uses long arm action through a ¾ slot, lower half stays online, repeats delivery well, fastball sat 73-76 mph and showed some cutting action, showed good command of 61-65 mph curveball that varied between 10/4 and 11/5 action, throws strikes consistently, allowed three hits and struck out two in two innings of work, interesting young prospect with upside, one to follow in 2018 class.
Luke Price, 1B/RHP, Christian Academy of Louisville, 2017
6-foot-3, 205-pound prospect uses long and loose arm action through a high-3/4 slot, smooth rhythm in delivery with minimal effort, lower half stays online, fastball is straight at 75-80 mph, shows good command of 59-61 mph curveball with gradual 11/5 action, allowed one hit, walked two, and struck out two in his two innings of work, has potential for additional velocity.
Jack Biernesser, RHP, St. Xavier HS, 2017
6-foot, 175-pound prospect uses short arm action through a high-3/4 slot, regular effort in delivery, has shown a steady increase in velocity since July, fastball sat 76-80 mph topping at 81, shows occasional slight arm-side run, 62-65 mph curveball is inconsistent and needs continued development, tends to get under the curveball leaving it up with minimal action, allowed four hits and walked one in two innings of work, has good upside and will really benefit from work on secondary pitches.
Andrew Huff, 3B/RHP, Ryle HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect uses medium arm action through a high-3/4 slot, throws across body some, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 73-76 mph topping at 77 and is mainly straight, 63-67 mph curveball shows gradual 11/5 action, struck out one in his inning of work, was able to consistently throw strikes.
Thomas Spiritoso, RHP/SS, Ryle HS, 2017
5-foot-8, 140-pound prospect uses long arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, lower half stays online, repeatable mechanics, consistently throws strikes, fastball sat 70-74 mph and topped at 75, fastball shows some slight arm-side run, showed a 65-66 mph curveball which tended to be flat and needs continued development, allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out two in his two innings of work in game play.
