Top Tier Taiwan Scout Day: Quick Hits

Eliott Wilk
Central Region Operations Director

On Monday, July 29th, the Prep Baseball Kansas staff traveled to Creekside Baseball Park in Parkville, MO to host the inaugural Top Tier Taiwan Scout Day. This event, which is in its first year, featured 15+ members of Top Tier Taiwan in attendance.

All of our events offer players the opportunity to update their recruiting resume and showcase their talents in front of our staff. We also use these events as identifiers for future invite-only events, like the Preseason All-State, our summer Top Prospect Games, and the prestigious Prep Baseball Future Games that takes place at the tail end of the summer. Earlier, our staff rolled out the day’s statistical standouts in leaderboard format within our ‘Stat Story’, which you can find HERE. Today, after combing through our notes from the day, we’ve compiled some of the event’s standouts within these ‘Quick Hits’. Read below to learn about 6 names that popped to our staff from Monday's trip to Parkville.

QUICK HITS

+ INF Pai-Ting Chien (Kao-Yuan, 2024) put together one of the most complete performances of the day at Monday’s event. At 6-foot-1, 170-pounds, Chien showcased a smooth right-handed swing that found the barrel often throughout his BP round, spraying line drives to the left-center gap with a peak exit velocity of 93.3 mph - the top mark of the day. Defensively, he showed off his versatility and arm strength, posting 80 mph and 83 mph marks from the infield and outfield respectively. Chien also hopped on the mound, pitching in the low-80s (T83 mph) with his fastball while commanding the zone with a curveball at 73-75 mph.

+ Featuring five distinct pitches and two different arm slots, RHP/C/INF Jing-Jhe Huang (Taitung, 2026) tossed an intriguing bullpen in Monday’s look. The 5-foot-7, 150-pound righty primarily worked over the top with a fastball at 79-83 mph, pairing that with a curveball at 67-70 mph and changeup at 73-74 mph. Huang also showed the ability to drop down to a sidearm slot and spin a horizontal moving slider at 58-60 mph with a sinker at 68-70 mph. What impressed the most was his ability to consistently land all five pitches for strikes. Also a standout behind the plate, Huang led all catchers in velocity (74 mph) and pop time (1.87-1.90) thanks to a quick transfer and accurate arm.

+ Plenty physical at 6-foot, 185-pounds, RHP/INF Cheng-Yu Lin (Yingge, 2026) is a two-way name to know from this event. Lin worked from gap-to-gap throughout BP, using a strong, right-handed barrel to post a strong average exit velocity of 85.8 mph, sending his best ball 321 feet at 91.9 mph. That strength translated to the field where he fired a 78 mph bullet across the diamond - the third best mark on the day. Afterwards Lin hopped on the mound, running his fastball up to 87 mph, sitting in the low-to-mid-80s. Aside from his velocity, which led the event, Lin’s fastball played with natural carry, averaging 19 inches of vertical break. Off of that he showed the aptitude to land a curveball/slider/changeup mix for strikes.

+ RHP Kun-Fang Wang (Taitung, 2026) is a standout on the mound from Monday’s event. Listed at 6-foot, 163-pounds with plenty of room to add size and strength, Wang pitched in the low-80s with his fastball, topping out at 85 mph on the day. Off of that Wang filled up the lower third of the zone with four offspeed pitches: a curveball at 67-68 mph, changeup at 78-81 mph, splitter at 68-72 mph, and a sinker at 75-76 mph.

+ INF Ting-Kai Hsu's (Taitung, 2026) power was on full display throughout his round of batting practice on Monday. With an average exit velocity of 86.2 mph, Hsu consistently elevated the ball to the pullside with strong, quick hands, creating natural lift with his right-handed swing. His peak exit velocity of 93.3 mph, peak batted distance of 347 feet, and average distance of 304 feet were all top marks at the event. That strength was evident on the mound as well, where he wrapped up the day pitching in the low-80s on the mound with his fastball.

+ OF Yen-Cheng Chang (Taitung, 2026) is packed with athleticism in a 5-foot-9, 150-pound build. Chang had that athleticism on display early, running the day’s fastest 60 (6.93 seconds) to get the event started. At the plate, Chang swung a flat right-handed barrel that sprayed line drives to all fields, reaching 89.9 mph on his best barrel. Additionally, he showcased sure-handed actions in the outfield, firing a 79 mph bullet on his firmest throw.
