Kansas Class of 2027 Inaugural Rankings

Andy Urban
Central Region & Creekside Scouting Supervisor

As our rankings cycle for this calendar year concludes, the PBR Kansas staff is unveiling our inaugural Class of 2027 rankings, debuting the list at 25 total names.

It is still extremely early to be forecasting Class of 2027 prospects, especially since they have yet to play a high school spring season. We are fully aware that these prospects are nowhere near their future potential ceiling but there are a number of prospects who have emerged throughout 2023 in the state that look to be the next crop of high-level players to come through the state. Several of the high-end talents should also be known on a national level as well. There are a plethora of names that are not presently on our rankings who will make strides over the next couple of years as they continue to physically mature, ultimately finding themselves on our board.

With that being said, below you will learn more about the top-10 players that make up these initial 2027 rankings. Many of these players are physically advanced with impressive right-now tools. This rankings includes one of the strongest crop of players we have seen out of the Wichita. It is also heavy on hard throwing right-handers and uber athletic outfilders.  We have only ranked players that we have seen on multiple occasions and feel a familiartiy with their game. Later in the week we will go into more details on the players who make up the back-end of our top-25, as well as a few names-to-know that just missed the cut.

The Top 10

No. 1

Brett Liezert RHP / 1B / Olathe East, KS / 2027

Leading the way in our initial rankings is a near college ready right-hander. Liezert shows a three pitch mix featruing a fastball in the upper 80s, a wipe out slider that he lands for strikes in the low 70s, and feel for a sinking changeup. At 6-foot-1, 200-pounds there is very little left to have to dream on to invision Liezert pitching at the next level.

No. 2

Grant Westphal OF / RHP / Blue Valley, KS / 2027

An electric left-handed bat with a sweet swing, game-changing speed, and arm strength, our number two ranked player brings all five tools to the field. Westphal is an elite multip sport athlete with one of the highest celings in the state. At 6-foot-2 180-pounds Westphal projects as top-tier defender in center field and a middle of the order bat at the next level.

No. 3

Finn Moore RHP / 3B / Lawrence Free State, KS / 2027

Finn Moore is an all-around player the does everything on the field well. A physical 6-foot 200-pound right-handed bat that can swing it for power and average with a mature approach at the plate, Moore has played against some of the best talent in the country had success. On the mound, the right-hander has feel for the zone and knows how to get out with his mid 80s fastball. Defensively, Moore projects best at 3B where he shows off soft hands and plenty of arm strength to make every play at the hot corner.

No. 4

Quincy Koehn RHP / 1B / Maize, KS / 2027

It is all about projection with number four on our list, Quincy Koehn. In just a year, the 6-foot-4,  195-pound right-hander has seen his velo jump from topping at 82 to reports in the upper 80s. His clean arm action and still projectable frame should allow Koehn to continue to add velo and sharpen his command, making him a national level pitching prospect.

No. 5

Kam Smith RHP / Girard, KS / 2027

Another projection right-hander holds the five spot on our list. Smith has arguably the most polish delivery and arm action in the state to go along with his 6-foot-2 160-pound frame and MLB bloodlines. Already pitching in the low to mid-80s expect to see Smiths velo skyrocket in the near future.

No. 6

Logan Baalmann SS / RHP / Thomas More Prep-Marian, KS / 2027

One of the most toolsy propects in the state comes out of TMP in Hays, Kansas. Baalmann is one of the top runners in the state, posting a 6.88 60. He also shows juice at the dish with BP exit velos in the upper 80s from his athletic 6-foot, 175-pound frame. Defensively, Baalmann has clean glove work with quick feet to go along with a strong arm across the diamond.

No. 7

Hays Ensley OF / RHP / Mulvane, KS / 2027

A three sport standout, Ensley has been the prototypical gamer that makes defensive plays in center an gets extra base hits every time we see him play, especially against high-end competion. The well rounded athlete could see his name rise up these rankings as he continues to put on size and strength.

No. 8

Carter Taldo OF / RHP / Olathe West, KS / 2027

One of the most physical players in the state at a lean 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, Carter Taldo really stands out in the outfielder with his size and athleticm. The right-handed hitter has the strength and bat speed to split the gap in any at bat. Taldo also shows off elite arm strength on the mound, where we have seen him up to 84. A prospect to keep an eye on as he continues to hone his bat to ball skills.

No. 9

Brayden Shannon SS / 3B / Basehor , KS / 2027

A projection shortstop with a high celing at 6-foot-1, 155-pounds, Shannon posted loud tools at the Junior Future Games with a 6.95 laser 60, 80 mph across the diamond, and 93 mph exit velo with a clean right-handed swing. Shannon is a high-follow prospect as he continues to polish his skill set.

No. 10

Drew Pittman SS / 2B / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2027

Rounding out our top 10 is Drew Pittman. Though the switch hitting SS has a well rounded game, but does not posses the most eye-popping tools on the list or the most physically mature frame at the 5-foot-10, 155-pound, but the shortstop seems to consistently find barrels and make plays defensively every time we see him.
