Prep Baseball Report Kansas
The Kansas class of 2016 already has ten college commitments with many more on the way. There is a solid group of prospects already squarely on the radar screen of college coaches and several other talented players on the verge of making a move into that category.
As we finished up our fall coverage earlier this month we have turned to updating our player rankings. Last week we posted our updated and expanded class of 2015 rankings, now we turn our focus to the 2016's.
Our last major update to the 2016 rankings was in August, since then we have seen several fall games, college camps, events and spent countless hours discussing prospects with baseball people across the state making minor tweaks in the rankings as players improved their stock. Today we update and expand the list to 90. Our next update will be prior to the 2015 spring high school season after taking in various winter events across the state.
Risers in the Top 25
A number of prospects improved their stock during the fall season including IF Alex Ronnebaum (Topeka Hayden HS), a projectable 6-foor-4, 165-pound left-hand hitting infielder that committed to Kansas State in November and is now ranked No. 19; RHP AJ Johnson (Blue Valley HS) an easy-armed right-hander that improved his fastball from mid-to-upper 70's in the summer to topping out at 86 this fall and is now ranked No. 22; RHP/1B Tanner Padgett (Valley Center HS), a physical 6-foot-5, 210-pound right-hand hitter with bat speed and low 80's strike-pumper on the mound that moves up to No. 23; and LHP Sam Duncan (Bishop Miege HS), who, like Johnson, has improved his velocity and command over the last several months and moves up to No. 25.
Newcomers to the 2016 rankings
Among the newcomers to the class of 2016 rankings are OF Marcus Altman (Hays HS), a projectable 6-foot-3, 185-pound right-hand hitting outfielder that enters the rankings at No. 58; C Brett Bonar (Rose Hill HS), a physical 6-foot-2, 190-pound left-hand hitting catcher with a middle-oppo approach at the plate that moves into the rankings at No 62; and C Tanner Holen (Manhattan HS), a 5-foot-10, 155-pound catcher that is a solid receiver with an accurate arm and thin, athletic frame with room to fill out that enters the rankings at No. 82.
