HUMBOLDT, KS - No matter what level of baseball it is - youth, high school, college or MLB - your team doesn’t rack up a 14-0 record without having a talented shortstop. This spring’s version of Humboldt HS is no exception with senior Hunter Murrow manning this critical position as they have rattled off 14 wins in a row to start the 2014 season.
The 6-foot-, 165-pound right-handed hitter has racked up big numbers at the plate so far this year hitting .511 with 25 runs scored and 22 RBI. Murrow has also used his speed and baserunning instincts to rack up 18 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
Humboldt head baseball coach Mike Miller has high praise for the 2013 All-League shortstop:
“Hunter is a very good defensive shortstop. He has great range both to his glove side and backhand side. He has very soft, quick hands that make him great with the glove. His arm strength profiles more at the next level as a second basemen but his quick release allows him to be a very good shortstop for our high school team,” Miller said.
“Hunter bats lead-off for us and has a .565 OBP. He does not hit for a lot of power but he is a very good up the middle/opposite field hitter that rarely strikes out.”
Murrow’s athleticism isn’t confined to just the diamond either. He picked up All-League and All-State honors on the football field this fall as a wide receiver, cornerback and punter. In the winter he earned the same honors on the basketball court as a guard for Humboldt’s hoops team that finished the season 18-4.
Murrow is also an ace in the classroom with a 3.98 GPA.
“Hunter is the true definition of a student-athlete and has a great work ethic on and off the field,” Miller added.
Murrow is interested in playing baseball at the junior college level where he can also begin work on a degree in physical therapy/sports medicine.
