2024 Puma Classic, Takeaways: Position Players

On Friday and Saturday, Sep. 13 and 14, the Prep Baseball JUCO Wire staff traveled to Westfield, Ind., home of the state-of-the-art Grand Park complex to, once again, host the annual Puma Classic. This event featured 30 teams with many need-to-know prospects who are capable of contributing at the next level – be it a four-year opportunity or pro ball.

Now, with the event behind us, our staff has compiled a handful of names that impressed our scouts throughout our two-day trip to Indiana. Below you'll learn more about several standout offensive performers from this year's Puma Classic with video and scout notes.


SOPHOMORE BATS (LISTED ALPHABETICALLY)

- SO. OF Marcelino Alonso (Madison) is an athletic 6-foot-2 outfielder for the Wolfpack. The right-handed hitter sits into his backside with some rhythm and clear bat-to-ball skills. Growing into more pop as he matures into his frame, Alonso is a name-to-monitor throughout his sophomore year.

- RFR. 1B Tyler Butina (Madison) is a physical left-handed bat for the Wolfpack standing at 6-foot-2, 225-pounds. Butina swings a powerful bat with the intent to do damage and feel to drive the ball in the air to the big part of the field.

- SO. C/1B Michael Carrano Jr. (Parkland) is a strong left-handed hitter for the Cobras. At the plate, Carrano showed feel for the barrel with a knack for driving the baseball hard in the air. Over the weekend, Carrano barreled a baseball through the left side, looking comfortable in the box.

- RSO. OF Judson Ceyanes (Kaskaskia) stands at 6-foot-1, 200-pounds with strength throughout his frame. At the plate, from the right-side Ceyanes swings a strong bat, elevating the baseball and driving it in the air especially to the pull side.

- SO. INF Brady Davidson (Heartland) was one of the top hitters for the Hawks last year, hitting at the top of the order. The compact and strong left-handed hitter has real feel to hit with some bat-to-ball ability making contact often and spoiling pitches. Davidson singled in his first at-bat of the weekend, barreling the ball back up the middle.

- SO. OF Jackson Dibble (McHenry County) is a left/left outfielder that was on the barrel over the weekend. Returning as one of the top bats for McHenry County, the strong 6-foot hitter stays short to the baseball taking a direct path with extension through contact showing some feel to elevate the baseball.

- SO. INF/OF James Duncan (Madison) is a strong left-handed hitter standing at 6-foot-2. A confident hitter from the left-side that showed some feel to hit left-handers, getting a base hit against one over the weekend. Returning as one of the top hitters for the Wolfpack as he got on base at a .414 clip as a freshman last year.

- SO. INF Michael Farina (Southeastern) stands at 6-foot-1 with strength in his frame. The right-handed hitter returns as one of the top bats for Southeastern after swatting 10 home runs last year. At the plate, Farina found the barrel over the weekend, sending the baseball hard up the middle for a base hit.

- SO. MIF Jalen Gellings (Madison) is an athletic 5-foot-10, 180-pound middle infielder that can really defend. In the field Gellings showed off his range making numerous plays with his feet including one up the middle. At the plate, the right-hander swing a flat path that stays in the zone with feel for the barrel.

- SO. INF Konner Giddley (Rock Valley) is a 6-foot infielder that collected base hits in bunches over the weekend. Tripled twice in game and collected another his later in the game, hustles out of the box with a home-to-first time of 4.50 seconds on a turn. Bouncy defender in the dirt thats is capable of playing multiple spots in the dirt.

- RFR. SS Eduardo Letamendi (Lake Land) is an athletic right-handed hitter that can really play shortstop. Letamedi plays with athletic actions on the left side with range to both sides and should be able to stick up the middle at the next level. At the plate, the right-hander homered early in the weekend to the pull side.

- SO. 1B Jaydon Luna (Olney Central) is a physical left-handed hitting first baseman with power. At the plate, Luna gets his A swing off often, showing feel for the barrel and having easy pop off the barrel. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound left-handed hitter barreled a baseball to the right center gap at 101 exit velocity.

- SO. INF Aamir Mitchell (Lansing) is a wiry 6-foot-4 infielder and was one of the more projectable hitters at the event. Returning as one of the top bats in the lineup, Mitchell has a knack of making hard contact when he connects with the baseball. From the right-side, Mitchell stays short to the baseball while showing some ability to leverage the baseball.

- SO. OF Cooper Ohlson (Kankakee) is a strong 6-foot, 210-pound right-handed outfielder that showed some barrel strength over the weekend. At the plate Ohlson sits in his backside and takes a direct path through the baseball with some feel to elevate the baseball.

- SO. INF/OF Spencer Pederson (Iowa Central) is a versatile defender standing at 5-foot-11, 190-pounds. At the plate, from the right-side Pederson takes a simple swing showing bat speed flashing pull side power, elevating the baseball hard to the left side of the diamond.

- SO. OF Parker Price (Kaskaskia) is a left-handed hitting outfielder with a chance to stick in center field. At the plate from the left-side, Price looks the part in the box and gets his A swing off consistently. A fluid and athletic swing with some ability to elevate the baseball, taking a tight turn and direct path to the baseball.

- RSO. OF Ryan Radek (Lansing) is a strong and physical 6-foot right-hander with a powerful barrel. Radek turned on a 90 mph fastball on the inner half for a stand up double in game over the weekend. The outfielder is a reliable defender with some athleticism.

- RSO. INF Pablo Rebollar (John A Logan) is a strong and powerful right-handed hitter that can play multiple spots on the field. At the plate, Rebollar made loud contact often including a home run, finding the barrel again in a two-strike count to end a long at-bat.

- SO. OF Cole Sims (Frontier) is a follow left-handed bat from the weekend standing at 6-foot-2, 195-pounds with more room to mature into his frame. At the plate, Sims gets easy pop off of the barrel, staying connected throughout his swing.

- SO. INF Ryan Skwarek (McHenry County) another returning hitter for McHenry County, the right-hander swings a quick bat with feel to elevate the baseball, showing some strength over the weekend. In the field Skwarek is a reliable defender that can play multiple positions, the arm will play on the left side of the diamond with carry and accuracy.

- SO. UTL Colson Smith (South Suburban) is athletically built standing at 5-foot-10, 180-pounds. The left-handed hitter is comfortable in the box with a short and compact swing that stays in the zone a long time. Feel for the barrel and flashed the ability to go the other way.

- SO. OF Trey Swiderski (John A Logan) is a top returning bat for John A Logan this year. The corner outfielder looks the part in the box and has some loud tools with 15 home runs under his belt from last year, also a 6.58 runner with a pro average arm from the outfield. Swiderski looks to do damage in the box swinging with intent and extra leverage out front.

- SO. INF Kemper Whisman (Rend Lake) is an athletic 6-foot-1 infielder that showed feel for the barrel on the weekend. At the plate, the right-hander stays short through the baseball, taking a direct and flat path through the baseball, on the barrel in game shooting a line drive up the middle for a base hit.

- SO. OF Adison Worthman (Parkland) was one of the more physical prospects in attendance over the weekend. The right-handed hitter showed real power from the right-side homering in game to the pull side. A high-level hitter, Worthman swatted seven home runs last year while hitting over .330.

- SO. OF Nate York (Rend Lake) is a physical outfielder that performed over the weekend. The 6-foot-1 outfielder at the plate sits wide with loose wrists, taking a direct path to the baseball, shot a ball through the infield during gameplay over the weekend.


FRESHMAN FOLLOWS (LISTED ALPHABETICALLY)

- FR. 1B Bailey Collins (Frontier) is a physical left-handed bat-to-know for the Bobcats, standing at 6-foot-3, 210-pounds. At the plate, Collins swings with plenty of intent, looking to really impact the baseball and drive the baseball to the big part of the field. A potential middle-of-the-order bat and name-to-know for Frontier.

- FR. INF Bryce LaSane (Triton) is an athletic 6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed hitter to know for the Trojans. In the box, LaSane is relaxed and keeps it simple, taking a short and direct path to the baseball while flashing the ability to use the whole field.

- FR. OF Freddy Ragsdale (South Suburban) is a premium left-handed hitting athlete for South Suburban. At the plate, Ragsdale stays short and quick through the baseball showing overall control of the barrel and bat-to-ball skills. Ragsdale is a high-follow freshman and name-to-know moving forward.

- FR. C Hector Roca (Wabash Valley) is a physical 6-foot-3 right-handed hitting catcher. At the plate, Roca has plenty of strength in the bat with easy pop off the barrel with the natural ability to drive the ball in the air. In gameplay the right-hander worked a long at-bat before finding the barrel for a double.

- FR. OF Kam Yearsley (John A Logan) is a physical left-handed hitter to monitor throughout his JUCO career. Yearsley has real feel to hit from the left-side, was on the barrel in the second game of the weekend to the pull side for a standup double.
