PBR talks with Navy commit Michael McCormick

Michael McCormick a 6'2 RHP from Speedway High School recently committed to play baseball at the Naval Academy. At two different PBR events McCormick has been up to 87 on the mound. Here is our conversation about his decision to attend Navy...

PBR: Why did you choose Navy?
Michael: I chose Navy to continue playing baseball at the collegiate level, to receive a great education, and to serve my country.

PBR: Was it important to go to a school not in the Midwest and experience a different part of the country?
Michael: It was not necessarily important for me, but I am definitely looking forward to embarking on my Navy adventure.

PBR: You’re situation is unique going to Navy and having to go to Prep School for a year. Can you describe what your first year will be like?
Michael: My first year will prepare me physically and help me to be better accustomed with the military life.

PBR: The Navy is a big commitment beyond college, can you describe the commitment you had to make?
Michael: I knew that committing to the Naval Academy was not simply a college decision. I understand that it is a career choice.

PBR: What were your expectations about recruiting heading into the summer?
Michael: I truly did not know what to expect, other than knowing that I would have many opportunities to be seen playing with the Pony Express organization.  Being ranked on PBR's site was also additional exposure for me.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that you will help Navy?
Michael: Leadership is my biggest strength.  I plan to take my leadership skills to Navy and contribute as a varsity pitcher.

PBR: How has travel baseball helped your development as a player?
Michael: Travel baseball has been a tremendous developer of my game.  It has afforded me the chance to play with (Pony Express), against, and to be coached by (Jon Richardson and Mike Farrell) some of the best in the game.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Michael: My parents have had the biggest impact on me as a baseball player.  They have supported me in all my endeavors.

PBR: What were your stats for this spring season at Speedway?
Michael: 45 IP, 4.25 ERA, 42 K, 3W-3L, .425 BA

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher/hitter that you have faced in Indiana?
Michael: The toughest guy I have faced is myself.  I continue to challenge myself daily so that I can be my best.
