Marucci Prospects Scout Day : Quick Hits

On Saturday, February 10th, the PBR Indiana staff traveled to Elkhart, Indiana to host the Marucci Prospects Northern Indiana Scout Day. This event featured players from the Marucci Prospects organization, along with other prospects that hail from the northern part of the state.

Nearly 50 prospects showcased their talents this past weekend and participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball Indiana staff. Winners

+ '25 LHP Colton Rerick (Penn HS) was one of my favorites of the day. I was impressed with the pitch-ability that he showed at last year's Canes Scout Weekend, and now the stuff has ticked up considerably. The athletic, 5-foot-11, 170 pound southpaw again showed off his ability to place the ball where he wants, but this time working the fastball up to 86 mph (83-85). Rerick showcased two above average offspeed offerings - a sharp curveball at 71-73 mph that he showed feel to land, along with along with a 76-78 mph changeup that showed late arm side run. There is easy intent within a well-sequenced delivery, and the arm swing is full, releasing from a high 3/4 angle. 

+ '25 C Cohen Heady (Warsaw HS) took the loudest round of batting practice of the day, reaching a peak exit velocity of 101.2 mph. The physical, 6-foot-1, 195 pounder showed off a heavy, accurate barrel, producing loud contact in 77% of his BP swings while averaging 94.3 mph throughout the day. Heady shows above average bat speed & strong rotational capabilities within an upward swing, however there is some unneccessary drag in the barrel that can still be improved. Heady was solid in the bullpen portion of his evaluation, providing a broad-shouldered target and working beneath the bottom of the zone strike with soft glove actions. The uncommitted junior showed above average catch-and-throw skills, topping out at 77 mph from the crouch while posting pop times that ranged from 1.98 - 2.03. 

+ '25 OF Connor Reed (Northwood HS) took my favorite round of batting practice of the day. Another strong performer at the 2023 Canes Scout Weekend - Reed laced one line drive after another with a quick and simple left-handed stroke. The athletic, 5-foot-11, 160 pounder hits out of a balanced stance, showing a smooth hand load and leg lift trigger before whipping quick hands through the zone. There is gap-to-gap barrel accuracy within the swing that we have seen translate to gameplay, and his foot speed (6.89 60) is an above average tool.

+ '25 RHP James Tabor (Northridge HS) was another arm that showed offseason improvements, working his fastball at 82-85 mph throughout his bullpen session. The 6-foot, 170 pound right-hander was able to get the fastball in the zone at an 87% clip - affirming 2023 looks where he lived in the strike zone. Spinning a tight, 75-77 mph slider with solid arm speed makes it easy to suggest more velocity is in the tank, and Tabor also showed an above average change at 77-79 mph to round out a three-pitch mix. The delivery is athletic with consistent tempo and his arm shows easy acceleration to a high 3/4 release point. 

+ '26 2-way Sullivan Kress (New Prairie HS) was one of the more intriguing prospects of the day. A wiry, 5-foot-10, 160 pound athlete - Kress showcased a live outfield arm, reaching 93 mph from the outfield, an event best. The arm speed translated to the bump in the form of an 83-84 mph fastball. Kress has significant room for growth on the mound, a thrower at this point that is still learning to move down the mound. The arm speed Kress showcased was impressive - suggesting mechanical refinement on the mound will lead to quick improvements. The arm talent Kress showed makes him an interesting '26 follow from the northern part of the state.

+ '25 SS Nate Dutkowski (Northwood HS) took the best round of infield of the day, showcasing fundamental actions and quick feet, along with playable body control. Built with lean strength at 6-foot-1, 160 pounds - Dutkowski also took a solid round of batting practice, with his best ball coming off the bat at 95 mph. The barrel works flat through the zone, a swing geared for line drive contact, and he flashed some pull-side strength. 

+ '25 1B Einar Fagerli (Penn HS) holds a projectable frame at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and shined during batting practice, where he showed above average bat strength. An arm bar load sets up a swing that is built to leverage balls to the pull-side with above average bat speed, allowing for pull-side juice in an upward path. Fagerli reached a peak exit velocity of 97.4 mph, averaging 89.6 mph, and also showed off above average arm strength with an infield velocity of 84 mph.

 + Two Saint Joseph freshmen, RHP Julian Cosey and SS AJ LaSane, stood out amongst the group of younger prospects in attendance. Cosey, a projectable young arm that stands at 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, provided an upside look in his 'pen. There is some intriguing sling in the arm action that produced a fastball up to 80 mph, a number that will surely improve with added strength and mechanical refinement. Far from a finished product, Cosey walked away as a young arm to follow in the coming years. LaSane showcased well across the board with solid body control for the class and budding athleticism. A compact, 5-foot-10, 170 pounder - LaSane reached a peak exit velocity of 92.1 mph. An efficient path highlights a mechanically sound right-handed swing, and LaSane showed solid overall actions for the class in his workout at shortstop.
