JFG Recap : Rising Stars of Indiana
August 1, 2024
Although mother nature ultimately ended the week for this talented group of 2028 grads from Indiana, the 14u group that represented the state established themselves as one, if not the best, 14u team at the event - going 5-0 on the week and outscoring opponents 47 to 19...
This group was loaded with future prospects, and I am willing to bet that a good chunk of this roster will end up wearing a division one uniform at some point in their career. Read along to find notes on each player that represented 14u Team Indiana, listed alphabetically.
Mason Biernacki OF / 3B / Penn , IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, 7.06-60, 88 Outfield Velocity, 93+ exit velocity, 85 mph fastball, 68-70 mph slider (2400+), multiple 95+ in-game exit velocities + Notable Statistics : 8 for 12, 4 XBH, 5 R, 6 RBI, 8 SB / 3.1 IP, 1 ER, 2 K - Biernacki was the unofficial "MVP" for Team Indiana showing off the most well-rounded skillset of the group. Athletic, explosive movements in everything that he does. There is real electricity in the barrel turn combined with well-advanced weight control. A high-end follow from this group that has the ability to blossom into a tooled-out prospect. |
Darret Branson RHP / OF / Evansville Mater Dei, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot-1, 160 pounds, 82 mph fastball, 69-72 mph breaking ball (2200+), 66-68 mph changeup. + Notable Statistics : 6.1 IP, 0 earned runs, 1 walk - Competitor, wants the ball in the big moment and pitches with fire. Branson shows above average stuff presently with a high-waisted frame that holds upside. Fills the zone with three quality offerings and his breaking ball should blossom into a swing-and-miss offering. |
Cole Breeden RHP / 1B / Mater Dei, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot-4, 160 pounds, 82 mph fastball, 70-72 mph slider, 70-72 mph changeup + Notable Statistics : 5 IP, 2 earned runs, 0 walks - Breeden looks the part of a future star with pristine arm action and an ultra-projectable frame that will pack on velocity in a hurry. There is present feel for three with above average stuff that will louden in a hurry. Ceiling is uncapped - special upside. |
Canyon Koonce OF / LHP / Brownsburg, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot, 160 pounds, 6.99-60, 86 mph exit velocity + Notable Statistics : 3 for 6, 2 XBH - Looking the part of a high-level CF prospect, Koonce patrolled the outfield with poise and confidence, with the future run-tool looking like a sure bet. The left-handed hitter has a loose-wristed stroke with impactful flick and excellent bat-to-ball abilities. High floor prospect with one of the better hit tools in the class. |
Brody McGaha SS / 2B / Mooresville, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurable : 5-foot-9, 150 pounds, 81 mph infield velocity, 7.32-60, 83+ exit velocity + Notable Statistics : 5 for 7, collected an RBI in all 5 games. - Our best defender on the dirt, showed off high-level infield actions with soft hands and efficient footwork. Offensively, there is minimal swing-and-miss in his game, left-handed swing works short and direct with obvious bat to ball skills. Dirtbag-type player with instincts between the lines. |
Gavin McGee RHP / 3B / RONCALLI HIGH SCHOOL, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 5-foot-10, 155 pounds, 84 mph fastball, 66-70 mph curveball (2400+), 75-76 mph changeup + Notable Statistics : 3.2 IP, 7 strikeouts (team high) - A strong-armed righty with some of the best stuff on the staff, presently. Showed swing-and-miss stuff in his start, with the ability to miss bats with all three pitches in his arsenal. Outstanding arm action |
Billy Miller SS / RHP / Kouts, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot, 155 pounds, 84+ exit velocity, 6.98-60, 79 mph infield velocity, 84 mph fastball, 64-66 mph curveball + Notable Statistics : 4 for 6, 3 XBH / 1.2 IP, 2 K, 1 base runner allowed - Miller is a strong two-way player with exceptional abilities on both sides of the ball. I love the upside on the mound, the arm works with advanced arm speed and the delivery is athletic. Miller shows the ability to compete with multiple pitches in the strike zone and his fastball velocity will trend in the right direction. Has a chance to be one of the top arms in the class when it is all said and done. On the other side of the ball, Miller showed an athletic right-handed stroke with barrel feel and sneaky power. Very fundamental on the dirt with arm strength across the diamond that plays with carry. |
Chase Millington C / 3B / Terre Haute North, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot-2, 160 pounds, 85 mph exit velocity, 73 mph arm from the crouch, 2.05 pop + Notable Statistics : 3 for 8, 4 RBI, 2 XBH - Millington was one of my personal favorites from the group - a leader behind the dish that plays with fire. Well-sequenced right-handed swing plays with consistent pace and should grow into at least gap power as he matures into more strength. Looks the part of a high-end backstop with athletic movements and above average catch and throw skills. |
BISHOP MOORE 1B / RHP / Beech Grove Sr High School, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot-5, 177 pounds, 84 mph fastball, 69-75 mph breaking ball, 86+ exit velocity, 81 mph infield velocity + Notable Statistics : 1 IP, 3 K, 0 earned runs, on-base in 6 of 7 trips to the dish - Moore owns one of the highest ceilings on this list with a 6-foot-5 frame that belonged on the 16u team. Clean arm stroke that produces a very solid fastball for the age, mechanical refinements will allow the velocity to jump, easy to dream on 90+ fastball velocities in the near future. Offensively, owns a long-levered right-handed stroke that plays with some pull-side juice. |
Dylan Murphy SS / 3B / North Posey, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot-2, 190 pounds, 7.00-60, 81 mph infield velocity, 93 mph exit velocity + Notable Statistics : 3 for 11, 5 SB - Murphy has immense potential with a right-handed swing that holds serious power potential. The swing path is advanced with strength at impact and twitch in the launch. The run tool is advanced with a chance to be a future tool. Murphy has above average arm strength and infield actions to suggest he stays on the left-side in the long-run. Hard-nosed player with special tools to match. |
Andrew Noble OF / 3B / Westfield, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot, 180 pounds, 6.81-60, 84 mph exit velocity, 79 mph outfield velocity + Notable Statistics : 2 for 7, 5 RBI, 3 SB - Noble is one of the more physical bats in this star-studded lineup, creating excitement when combined with his team-best 6.81-60 yard dash. Noble holds upside as a speed/power threat and the fact that he hits from the left-side adds another exciting piece to the profile, as does the CF upside that he holds. |
Spencer Schiff C / RHP / Mater Dei, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot, 170 pounds, 88 mph exit velocity, 7.14-60, 72 mph arm from the crouch, 2.14 pop, 83 mph fastball + Notable Statistics : 2 for 9, 4 RBI, 3B - Schiff is an advanced right-handed hitter that ran into some tough luck this week, but the bat still shined nonetheless. A future physical bat, Schiff's swing is simple and he uses the ground well to create present above average bat speed. The arm is a future tool, as well, with solid catch and throw abilities and plenty of upside as a right-handed arm. |
Macon Simpson LHP / OF / Floyd Central, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot-2, 160 pounds, 79 mph fastball, 66-69 mph slider, 73-75 mph changeup + Notable Statistics : 2.1 IP, 1 hit, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts - Simpson holds a projectable frame with clean arm action - a combination that suggests his best days are well-ahead. The arm works out of a lower slot to provide some deception and he has very strong feel for all three pitches in his arsenal. Although not loud yet, this upside southpaw should pack on velocity in a hurry that will pair extremely well with his ability to pitch. |
Tavian Trotter SS / OF / Homeschool (IN), IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot, 180 pounds, 6.98-60, 79 mph infield velocity, 88 mph exit velocity, 92+ in-game exit velocities + Notable Statistics : 2 for 9, 2B, 3B, 5 runs scored - Trotter is an ultra-athletic, high-waisted prospect with an advanced toolset for the class. There is strength in a simple, right-handed swing that works uphill with present bat speed. Trotter's athleticism shines all over the diamond - able to play all over the infield and outfield, with instincts on the base-paths. |
Jack Whaley SS / 2B / Columbus North, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, 90+ mph exit velocity, 79 mph infield velocity, 7.25-60, 98 mph in-game exit velocity + Notable Statistics : 6 for 9, 2 BB, 5 R, 5 XBH, 3 RBI - Whaley was one of the most impactful offensive players in this uber-talented lineup. Using the ground within a simple swing, Whaley creates outstanding bat speed with a bat path that optimizes hard contact. He showed the ability to cover both high velocities and good spin with an adjustable swing. Whaley looks the part of a premier run-producer and shows fundamental actions on the dirt. High-end bat to follow in Indiana's 2028 class. |
Hayden Zellers OF / RHP / Greenfield-Central, IN / 2028+ Notable Measurables : 6-foot, 150 pounds, 7.17-60, 89+ exit velocity + Notable Statistics : 3 for 7, .500+ OBP - Zellers profiles as a high-end table-setter with a silky left-handed swing. Zellers owns one of the better bat paths of the group, allowing for backspun contact from pole-to-pole with twitch in the operation that will help grow into gap power as he adds strength to his immature frame. An above average runner presently, look for the run tool to louden as he matures into more lower body strength. Confident hitter that should make an immediate impact as a freshman at the varsity level. |
