Riverdale Warrior Spring Break Classic: Scout Blog

The 30th annual Riverdale Warrior Spring Break Classic was held last week across parts of the Murfreesboro area and was scattered across multiple host sites including Riverdale, Siegel, Blackman, Oakland, Smyrna, Coffee County, Wilson Central, Station Camp, and Beech. There were a handful of teams represented at the WSC including participating high schools from Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.

Our PBR Tennessee Staff was able to catch several games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week at the WSC and have compiled all of our scout notes together for a scout blog that will include video, scout notes and more from some standout performers from game play in the Murfreesboro area.

+ OF Evan Tomlin (Tullahoma, TN, 2024) hitting in the three spot for the Wildcats, Tomlin shows a relaxed and mature set up in the box from the right side. The uncommitted junior does a really good job at getting the barrel to the ball and making solid contact to all parts of the field. On Wednesday during his first at-bat, got the Tullahoma offense on the board in the first inning as he just missed an offering over the heart of the plate and settled for a deep sac fly to right that pushed across the first run of the game. Later in the contest, jumped on a fastball up in the zone and laced a sharply hit single through the right side of the field. Tomlin shows some tools as well as he is a 6.89 runner, has posted a 95 mph EV and is 85 mph from the outfield. Solid uncommitted prospect in the 2024 class in the state.

+ C/RHP Jayron Morris (Tullahoma, TN, 2024) although things didn’t go their way against a very talented Oak Park River Forest team out of Illinois, Morris showed some quality offerings on the mound during his start for Tullahoma on Wednesday. Working with a shorter and quick arm action from a mid ¾ slot, the right hander has a controlled and repeatable delivery on the mound and was able to keep hitters in check in the early innings of his outing. His fastball played in the low-to-mid-80’s (81-84 mph, T85 mph). Also shows some solid defensive actions behind the plate as well.

+ CINF Patrick Carmody (Oak Park River Forest, IL, 2023) swung one of the hottest bats for the Huskies offense in Wednesday's action. At 6-foot-0, 190-pounds, Carmody displays a strong and well developed lower half to his frame, relaxed stance and set up in the box with plenty of juice to all parts of the field. During his first at-bat on Wednesday against a low-to-mid-80’s arm, laced an RBI single back up the middle to get the offense on the board in the early going. During his second at-bat, launched a no-doubter into left field for a solo shot and doing the same in his third at-bat as he got a 3-2 offering over the heart of the plate and crushed his second home run of the game and would put the Huskies up 3-2 and would eventually create momentum for the offense to go on and extend their lead in the later parts of the game to secure the win. The senior is set to head to Illinois Wesleyan University this fall.

+ MIF Ethan Moore (Oak Park River Forest, IL, 2025) is an intriguing underclassmen who caught the eyes of our staff in Murfreesboro this weekend as the Louisville recruit stands out with a strong, athletic, and well developed lower half to the 5-foot-11, 175-pound frame. Hitting in the heart of the Huskies lineup, the sophomore shows a mature approach from the left side of the box with plenty of present strength. During their win early in the day on Wednesday, drove a double down the left field line that resulted in an RBI double. Made several plays defensively, moves well around the middle infield, high athleticism and strong arm. 

+ RHP Calvin Proskey (Oak Park River Forest, IL, 2023) didn’t have his best stuff during his start on Thursday night against Riverdale, but there is a lot to like in UC Santa Barbara commit as he shows plenty of upside to the long and lean 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame. Worked around some traffic on the mound in the early innings of his outing but still minimized the damage and kept the Warriors offense in check as it was a tight game the entire way. Proskey showed effortless upper-80’s (85-88 mph, T89) velocity with his fastball and a 12/6 shaped breaking ball at 72-75 mph. Clean mechanics, repeats well and is a smooth mover down the mound. High level follow across the state of Illinois the remainder of the spring as they are just kicking off their 2023 season.

+ C/OF Bradley Pippin (Riverdale, TN, 2024) you can’t mention the Riverdale Warriors without getting a look at Pippin who has recently committed to Middle Tennessee State to continue his baseball career. Is also a two-time PBR Future Gamer from 2021 and 2022 who continues to make strides with each look. A toolsy prospect who can play anywhere, primarily behind the plate or in the outfield for the Warriors. Had a double down the right field line on Wednesday night during his first at-bat that really got the Riverdale offense going as they eventually pushed two runs across in the opening frame. Athletic and lean looking at 5-foot-10, 180-pounds, and plenty of strength to go along with it, there is still some room to continue to fill out the frame. Look for Pippin to put up big numbers throughout the spring.

+ C/OF Gunnar Waldrop (Riverdale, TN, 2025) was another Riverdale Warrior who stood out both at the plate and defensively on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Waldrop is one of the top backstops in the 2025 class across the Volunteer state and he continues to improve with each look. Was a key contributor to the Warriors offense with one of his big knocks coming in their Thursday night win during the first inning, Waldrop cranked an upper-80’s fastball into left center field for an RBI double that would set the tone for the Warriors in the early going. Same situation for the sophomore on Wednesday night as Riverdale found themselves in a hole, trailing early, the underclassmen stepped up with two on in the home half of the first and laced a two-RBI double into the left center gap. Hitting in the heart of the Riverdale lineup, continue to see a hot bat from Waldrop this spring.

+ RHP Camden Sholar (Riverdale, TN, 2024) was dominant during his start for the Warriors on Thursday night against a very talented one through nine Oak Park River Forest lineup. The uncommitted right hander tossed a seven inning complete game during the night cap, allowing just one run. Sholar works with a shorter and quick arm action from a mid-to-high ¾ slot, has controlled tempo and works cleanly down the mound. At 5-foot-11, 145-pounds, a lean and wiry look to the junior as he has plenty of room to continue to develop and fill out his frame and make potential strides in velocity as well. His fastball played in the low-80’s and worked up to 84 multiple times with some late life to the offering. The slider (72-74 mph) plays well off the fastball as it mimics the pitch out of the hand, creates weaker contact and some swing and misses during his outing. Intriguing follow throughout the remainder of the spring and will be an exciting arm to see as the body matures and continues to develop.

+ 3B/RHP Jax Nichols (Riverdale, TN, 2024) was another Riverdale Warrior that swings a really solid bat at the plate from the right side. Nichols hits in the heart of the Warriors order and is a true power threat to opposing pitchers. On Wednesday night, sent a shot into deep left center that one-hopped the wall, resulting in an RBI double. During his second at-bat on Thursday night, also had a liner through the pull side that moved a runner into scoring position but was left stranded in the inning. Simple set up at the plate, quite load that doesn’t try to do too much with the bat. Line drive approach with a strong and sturdy 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame.

+ RHP/SS Thomas Crabtree (Collierville, TN, 2023) really liked the way Crabtree goes about himself on the field, mature actions all around the diamond. The East Tennessee State signee hit in three spot for the Dragons on Thursday during their doubleheader at Riverdale. During their game one win, laced a double in the backside gap into right center that plated home a run for Collierville and gave them the lead early in the game. The middle infielder is a lean and athletic 6-foot-2, 175-pounder who is silky-smooth with the glove and plays a very solid defense. Doubles on the mound as a legitimate dual guy, where we have seen the fastball in the upper-80’s in recent looks. 

+ OF/2B Matthew Autry (Collierville, TN, 2023) was a key contributor to the Dragons offense in both games on Thursday afternoon. During their game one win, Autry cashed in with two runners in scoring position and laced a single right back up the middle of the field that brought home a pair of runs for Collierville. In game two, showed some juice with the bat and launched a hanging breaking ball beyond the left field wall for a home run. Sneaky pop in the middle of the Dragons order with a smaller frame at 5-foot-7, 165-pounds. Moves around the bases well as he is a (6.99 runner). The senior looks to continue his success throughout the remainder of the spring season as he is set to head to Union University this fall.

+ RHP Scott Wyatt (Collierville, TN, 2023) the 6-foot-3, 170-pound Union University signee was really solid during the early parts of his start on Thursday against a very talented Noblesville squad. With a longer and mid-to-higher ¾ arm action, Wyatt worked primarily with the fastball and breaking ball combo during his outing. The fastball operated at 84-86 mph and topped at 87 mph with sinking action in the early innings of his start and eventually settled into the 83-85 mph range in the middle innings. Flashed a breaking ball at 72-74 mph with 11/5 shape. Controlled tempo on the mound, works well into the lower half and fills the zone. Going to be a vital piece to the Dragons staff as they continue to build off of their hot (13-2) start to the spring season.

+ INF AJ Greene (Collierville, TN, 2025) the PBR Tennessee staff got a look at Greene during the TN Preseason All-State at the beginning of February where he made an impression on our scouts. The sophomore swings the bat at a high level and is a vital piece to the Dragons offense as they are out to a (13-2) start in 2023. Mature and simple approach at the plate as well as majority of the Collierville lineup, during his third at-bat of their game one win lined an RBI knock into the pull side to extend the Dragons lead and essentially put things away. At 5-foot-11, 190-pounds, there is a lot to like from Greene, shows plenty of pop with the bat (95 mph EV), and moves well for his size (7.18 runner). Top-25 player in the Tennessee 2025 class as well and an intriguing follow the rest of the spring as Collierville looks to make some noise.

+ 3B/SS Aiden Reynolds (Noblesville, IN, 2026) the Indiana recruit caught the eyes of our scouts in the middle innings of the game against Collierville on Thursday. Got the barrel to a mid-80’s fastball offering up in the zone and drove it into left field for an RBI knock that would start to sway some momentum back to the Millers dugout as they trailed 5-3 after Reynolds hit. Later in the next inning, he found himself in another RBI situation as he drove a pitch into the right center gap for another RBI hit and would be right in the middle of the Noblesville big six run inning in the fourth. Reynolds displays a mature and advanced approach at the plate from the right side, doesn’t try to do too much with the bat, just simply hits. Was also a former PBR Junior Future Gamer in 2021 and is currently one of the top 2026’s in Indiana.

+ RHP/3B Bryce Riggs (Noblesville, IN, 2023) a sturdy and strong bodied frame at 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, the switch-hitting RHP/INF showed some pop from the left side of the plate during game play on Thursday against a very talented Collierville squad out of west Tennessee. In the middle innings of the game, the Eastern Illinois signee got a pitch belt-high over the plate and gave it a ride into deep right center that resulted in a no-doubt two run home run and would extend the lead for Noblesville to 9-5 in the fifth and capped off a big inning for the Millers as they would go on to get the win in a solid contest. Riggs also doubles as a right hander on the mound and has worked in the upper-80’s and touched 90 mph in recent looks. Key part to a very talented Noblesville roster, a team to keep an eye on in Indiana this spring.

+ LHP Nolan Decker (Noblesville, IN, 2024) although the Noblesville and Collierville matchup started leaning towards an offensive showdown in the middle innings and later parts of the game, both starting pitchers showed quality stuff on the mound. Decker attacked the zone with all offerings during his start for the Millers. The southpaw had the fastball and breaking ball both working for him, the fastball worked in the low-80’s (80-83, T84 mph) and he was able to locate it to both sides of the plate. The breaking ball (71-74 mph) was also thrown in all counts and he showed confidence in the offering as he pitched backwards at times. Leaner and athletic look to the frame at 6-foot-0, 190-pounds, will be a solid pickup for a program down the road.

+ RHP Ty Bradle (Hamilton Southeastern, IN, 2023) passes the eye test, both on the mound and at the plate with the 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame. Got the nod for the Royals on the mound in game one on a windy, Friday noon start. During the first and second innings of his outing, showed a heavy dosage of fastball as he blew multiple offerings by hitters as the fastball played in the 87-89 mph, T90 mph range early on. As he settled into the outing and into the middle innings, the fastball operated at 85-87 mph where he was still able to get swings and misses with the fastball, also showed a curveball at 72-76 mph that had some late and downward bite to it when it was down in the zone. Long and loose arm with a projectable frame, moves well down the mound, can be max effort at times but still shows really good stuff on the mound. At the plate, hit for extra bases twice as he roped a triple into the right center gap and followed it up with a double down the left field line, hitting near the top of the Royals lineup, one to keep an eye on this spring.
