Unsigned Senior Spotlight: Andrew Ray, C, Michigan City HS

Andrew Ray, is a 6-foot-1, 205 pound catcher from Michigan City High School. Ray recently attended the PBR Ft. Wayne Showcase and impressed the staff with his strength at the plate and his defensive abilities behind the plate. Ray has a quick compact swing that produces good pop. Behind the plate he had good pop times and showed a strong arm (74 mph). Ray placed himself as one of the top unsigned seniors left in the class. PBR had a chance to ask Ray a few questions about his recruiting process and his upcoming season.
PBR: As you enter your senior year of HS baseball, where are you currently in the recruiting process?
Ray: I am currently talking with Cincinnati, Northern Illinois and Duke.
PBR: What schools are you most interested in right now?
Ray: I am interested in all three of the school I listed previously in the last question.
PBR: What aspect of your game do you believe needs the most improvement?
Ray: My footwork while I'm throwing down to second base. Also, getting more of a weight transfer back and linear separation in my hitting.
PBR: What team do you play for in the summer, how do you feel playing for them helped you?
Ray: I play for the Michiana Scrappers (previously called the Michiana Clippers) and working with Coach Marazita has helped me out tremendously.
PBR: What preparation are you doing now for the upcoming high school season?
Ray: I am conditioning five days a week as well as lifting weight twice a day for five days a week. On top of that I am hitting and catching three times a week to work on mechanics and consistency.
PBR: What are your goals for the upcoming 2013 season?
Ray: My goals are to achieve All-State, as well as bat .500 considering I batted .425 last year. I want my slugging percentage to also go up.
PBR: What is your fondest memory or highlight from your 2012 baseball season (High School or Summer)?
Ray: My most memorable moment of the 2012 baseball season was when I hit a homerun off LaPorte High School to beat them at their field.
PBR: What were your stats for your 2011 HS season? Summer Season?
Ray: I batted .425, 2 HRs, .700 Slug., .505 OBP and .455 BA RISP for high school.
PBR: What is your GPA? If you have taken it, what did you get on the ACT/SAT?
Ray: My GPA is 3.75 out of 4.0. I currently retook the SAT last Saturday and I am awaiting those scores.
