Top Ten Profiles of 2021: No. 6 Colson Montgomery

The top 2021 player in Indiana, Colson Montgomery (Southridge HS), had the sixth most viewed profile this year. He is ultra-athletic with wide shoulders and projectable 6-foot-4 frame. Montgomery helped lead Southridge to three state finals appearances, winning the class 3A championship this past season. An Indiana recruit, Montgomery decided to forgo his time in Bloomington and sign with the White Sox after being selected 22nd overall in this year's MLB Draft.

Scouting Report

5/08/21: Indiana commit and 2021 top ranked player, Montgomery is a two way athlete that looks the part on the left side of the infield. Moves well laterally but should continue to develop defensive actions. Above average arm that will improve. At the plate does not miss the opportunity to take a healthy swing. Currently a double and triples hitter with high athleticism, the physique does not seem finished and could produce more power as it develops. Kept his team in the game with a late inning double driven deep. Has the ability to take over a game in every facet. Aggressive runner did not shy away from taking an extra base.

9/19/20: LakePoint Fall Invite- The top ranked 2021 in Indiana, Colson Montgomery (Southridge HS), had three at bats and three barrels for Team Indiana. Used the middle of the field well tonight, including a bases-clearing triple to the LCF gap.

9/13/20: The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Indiana recruit was the top ranked draft prospect at the event (#27 Overall), and continues to ooze projection every time he steps on the field. The frame is wide-shouldered with room to add 20-plus pounds which should assist in more power to come at the plate. The left-handed hitter took big swings throughout the weekend, “just missing” balls that were fouled straight back on multiple occasions with some swing-and-miss present, but found the barrel enough to collect a smattering of hits. From a balanced, slightly hunched over stance, there is intent to work uphill through the zone from the left side with obvious bat speed as he works short-to-long. The weekend look saw Montgomery with more of a pull approach which caused him to pull off the ball at times, but he was a threat to do damage in each plate appearance. While he moves athletically in the field, there is some refinement that will have to come to stick on the left side, although he has adequate arm strength to play third base, and given his limited repetitions, he could make significant advancements in that area of the game moving forward. The big question about Montgomery will be whether he can hit enough to be a corner guy. My gut says that he can, and the already impressive power should quickly increase as he fills out, and with more at-bats, the chance that he makes another jump seems likely given his athleticism.
