Q&A with Southern Indiana Commit Wyatt Daly
November 8, 2014
By Phil Wade
Indiana Executive Director
Castle High School senior catcher Wyatt Daly recently committed to Southern Indiana, last year's D2 National Champions. Daly is currently ranked No. 67 in Indiana class of 2015 player rankings.
PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose Southern Indiana?
Daly: I wanted to be part of a winning program, and USI definitely offers that. Great baseball combined with the academic programs I wanted was the right fit for me.
PBR: Where did USI first see you compete?
Daly: I could not say for sure, but I played in their fall league my freshman year and had a chance to be part of the end of season all star games, so that is probably where they saw me first. Being local gave me more opportunities to be in front of them.
PBR: When did you take your first visit to USI?
Daly: I’ve been on the campus to play baseball many times over the last three years but had my official visit in September of this year.
PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play when you first arrive on campus next fall?
Daly: I think they expect me to come ready to work hard and compete.
PBR; Were there any other schools you were considering?
Daly: Yes, I was also considering Vincennes University and the University of Indianapolis.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Daly: I have been fortunate to have played for some great coaches, and my parents have always been really supportive. As a player, I would have to say that Coach Welch, my coach at Castle High School, has had the biggest impact. He has always challenged me, and I do not think I would be at this point without his influence.
PBR: Who do you play for in the summer, and how did playing with them help you develop as a baseball player?
Daly: I play for the Newburgh American Legion Post 44 senior team. This was my second summer on the senior team. My sophomore summer I got to play with the older players, and that really helped me grow. This past summer we played a ton of games, got a lot of repetition and had a great, long season.
PBR: What are your goals both individually and as team this coming spring at Castle?
Daly: My individual goal is to be better than last year. I had a pretty good season but want to improve my batting average. As a team, we want to come together earlier, go farther than last year, and win that state title.
PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you've faced in Indiana?
Daly: I would have to say that the toughest pitcher I’ve faced in Indiana is Ryan Dills, from North, a couple of years ago. He had a great fastball and slider and always hit his spots.
PBR: What were your stats last spring at Castle?
Daly: I batted .315, which I am looking to improve this year. I had a .551 on base percentage and a fielding percentage of .964.
PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
Daly: My most memorable baseball moment to date would have to be the post season run we had at Castle last year. We started the season slowly, but finally came together as a team and ended up making a deep run in the post season.
