Q&A with 2015 Elon University Commit; Kellan Elsbury

Kellan ElsburyZionsville High School left-handed hurler Kellan Elsbury recently gave his verbal commitment to Elon University in North Carolina.  The No. 61 ranked player in Indiana's 2015 class knows how to pound the zone while changing speeds, keeping hitters off balance.

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose Elon? 

Elsbury: I ultimately chose Elon because of their academic standards coupled with a great baseball tradition. Balancing academics and baseball was a key consideration for me.  Additionally, Elon has recorded 16 winning seasons in the last 17 years under Coach Kennedy and has appeared in 5 NCAA regionals in the last 8 years. 

PBR: Where did Elon first see you compete? 

Elsbury: Elon first saw me play in Nashville, TN and then three tournaments after that this past summer. 

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus? 

Elsbury: They have told me that I should expect to throw a lot early being a lefty in their program. I will continue to work hard every day and see where that leads me. 

PBR: What other schools were you considering? 

Elsbury: There was interest from several schools in the Horizon League and Big 12 plus Southeast Louisiana and Georgetown. 

PBR: What were your expectations in regard to the whole recruiting process? 

Elsbury: I didn't really have too many expectations in recruiting as an outcome. I just went out, played as hard as I could, and let the rest fall into place. 

PBR: You played for the Indiana Bulls this summer, talk about your experience playing for them.  

Elsbury: It was an amazing experience. I created great relationships with my teammates and coaches that will benefit me forever. Without the Bulls, I would not be where I am today. 

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player? 

Elsbury: My Dad has had the biggest impact on me. He has given me every opportunity I need to succeed. 

PBR: What were your stats at Zionsville last spring? 

Elsbury: I threw 32 innings in the HCC last spring recording 40 strikeouts while allowing 8 BB with a 0.9 WHIP and a 1.34 ERA in conference games. 

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you've faced in Indiana? 

Elsbury: The HCC is filled with talent at the plate. There really isn't one hitter that I can single out. But, the toughest hitting team I have faced is the Chet Lemon Juice out of Florida. 

PBR: Now that you've committed, what are your goals going forward as a high school baseball player? 

Elsbury: Going forward in high school, I plan to continue to work hard, get stronger, add velocity over the winter and help Coach Moore and the Zionsville Eagles have a very successful season next spring.
