Preseason Preview: Yorktown HS

By Ben Grossberg
Lead Scout, PBR Indiana

Mike Larabee and the Yorktown Tigers are coming into the 2013 with high expectations after a disappointing 2012 season.  The Tigers bring back a lot of varsity experience with six returning starters and six pitchers that logged innings in 2012.

Larabee will rely on a strong senior class led by RHP/SS Ryan Cates, C/RHP Zeth Tanner, 2B Austin Stout, and 1B/P Kam Kennedy.

Cates is the Tigers top returning arm after going 4-3 with a 3.07 ERA in 2012. He will also be one of their top hitters.  Cates hit .333 with seven doubles and 19 RBI last season.

Tanner is a middle of the order hitter  that hit .270 in 2012, with three homeruns and 20 RBI. Stout, an Olney Central commit, posted a .349 average, with 21 runs scored. Kennedy, like Cates, saw a lot of time on the mound going 4-1 with a 3.72 ERA. Kennedy also hit .349 with three homeruns and 22 RBI last season.

Yorktown has several other players that should contribute in 2013. RHP/OF Drew Phillips saw limited action on the mound in 2012, but showed a good fastball at a recent PBR event topping out at 84 mph. Travis Knight will also be counted on for innings. In 2012 he threw 14 innings, appearing in eight games. Sophomores Clay Dungan (INF) and Jacob Preston (RHP) also saw action in 2012. Dungan hit .302 with 12 RBI and Preston went 1-0 appearing in three games.

While 2012 wasn’t what the Tigers expected, 2013 has a much brighter outlook. Yorktown brings back a lot of talent and should be in competition for a conference and sectional title.
