Preseason All State: 2014 OF Analysis

The outfield group at the 2013 Preseason All-State Showcase was deep in talent. Twenty-six of the 42 arms were 80 mph or higher. Leading the way in the outfield group were New Castle's Grant Malott and Lake Central's Alec Olund. Below are the top 10 outfielders from the February 23 Preseason All-State Showcase.
1. Grant Malott, OF, New Castle HS, 2014:
6-foot, 170 pound junior runs a 6.77 60. In the OF showcased advanced actions. Throws over the top at 86 mph with carry and accuracy. His hands are soft and displays a quick exchange. Possesses quick feet and plays through the ball. Showcased good athleticism. At the plate uses an athletic setup with a long stride. His bat speed is quick and gets to extension producing gap to gap power with barrel whip. Rhythm is fluid.
2. Alec Olund, OF/3B, Lake Central HS, 2014:
6-foot-1, 170 pound athletic junior runs a 6.83 60. Possesses an athletic frame and athletic actions from the OF. Uses a long arm action and throws over the top at 82 mph with carry and accuracy. At the plate starts with a tall, open setup and uses a smooth load. His stride is short and possesses quick bat speed producing barrel whip. The overall approach is advanced. Gets to extension producing gap to gap power.
3. Tre Gantt, OF, Hamilton Southeastern HS, 2014:
5-foot-9, 170 pound outfielder runs a 6.63 60. From the OF uses a short arm action and throws from a high ¾ arm with average carry and good accuracy. His feet work and moves well across the OF. At the plate uses a balanced setup with a smooth load. His stride is short and shows excellent balance. Produces line drives consistently and is fluid with his rhythm.
4. Treg Haberkorn, OF, Leo HS, 2014:
6-foot-3, 183 pound junior runs a 6.76 60. In the OF uses a long arm action and throws over the top at 87 mph with carry. He shows athletic actions and plays through the ball. Moves well with quick, fluid feet and displays a clean exchange. At the plate hits from the left side using a balanced approach with a short stride. His swing path is level and gets to extension with the ability to drive the ball with pop. Showcased an exit velo of 85 mph.
5. Ben Powell, OF, Brebeuf Jesuit HS, 2014:
6-foot-2, 205 pound junior possesses a strong lower half and wide shoulders. From the OF throws from a high ¾ arm slot with some accuracy at 81 mph. He moves well with good hands and a clean exchange. At the plate uses an athletic setup and hits from a crouch position. His stride is short and uses his lower half well. His bat speed is quick with a long path to the baseball. Showcased some barrel whip and projectable power.
6. Zack St. Pierre, OF/LHP, Noblesville HS, 2014:
6-foot, 170 pound junior showcased good arm strength from the OF at 88 mph with carry. His arm action is short and throws over the top with accuracy. His defensive actions are solid and moves well across the OF. Possesses soft hands and a clean exchange while playing through the baseball. At the plate starts slightly closed with his setup and doesn’t use a stride. His bat speed is average and shows some pop potential with barrel whip.
7. Eric Petruzzi, OF/RHP, Brebeuf Jesuit HS, 2014:
5-foot-11, 175 pound runs a 7.22 60. From the OF he plays through the ball and displays athleticism. Showcased a strong arm with carry at 86 mph. At the plate hits from an athletic setup and uses a short stride. His bat speed is above average and produces line drives. At times is narrow and will pull off, but overall is a solid hitter. Posted an 87 mph exit velo.
8. Evan Miiller, OF/MIF, Zionsville HS, 2014:
5-foot-10, 170 pound junior moves well in the outfield with quick, fluid footwork. Uses a long arm action and throws from a high ¾ arm slot and was 84 mph from the OF. Displays a clean exchange and plays through the ball. At the plate uses a balanced setup with a smooth load. His stride is short and is explosive with his lower half. Uses a short path to the baseball with quick bat speed. Shows some power potential while showcasing the ability to drive the ball to the gaps.
9. Elijah Weartz, OF, Center Grove HS, 2014:
6-foot-3, 185 pound junior runs a 7.06 60. Possesses an athletic frame. Showcased good arm strength at 85 mph using a long arm action and an over the top arm slot. His defensive actions are athletic and shows quick, fluid footwork. At the plate his mechanics are raw. Starts with a high elbow and dives towards the baseball. Does show some projectable pop. Produced an exit velo of 81 mph.
10. John Scheil, OF, Lawrence North HS, 2014:
5-foot-9, 165 pound junior is athletic, but undersized. Arm action is long and throws over the top at 83 mph with good accuracy. Moves well in the OF with solid actions. At the plate uses a balanced setup with a smooth load. Shows an advanced approach using a short path to the baseball producing line drives. His overall rhythm is smooth. Shows good speed running a 6.85 60 at the All State Event, but has posted a quicker time at a previous PBR event, a 6.78.
