PreSeason All State Showcase: 2013 Top 25 Prospects



The Prep Baseball Report Indiana Preseason All-State Showcase on February 25 at Lawrence North High School featured 98 players from the Class of 2013, 2014, and 2015.  The overall talent at the event was exceptional, easily making it the most talented group of players ever to attend a PBR Indiana event. 

Filtering through all the talent was a difficult task, but at the same time enjoyable.  Matthew Gatewood, a 6-foot-1 RHP/OF from South Decatur HS, was the number one overall prospect at the event.

Below are the top 25 prospects in the 2013 class that attended the Preseason All-State Showcase.  There are however, many players with great talent that did not make the top 25.  In the coming days we will post the top 25 players in the 2014 class, top 10 players in the 2015 class, and a list of the “Best of the Rest.”

Top 25 Overall 2013 Rankings

1.  Matthew Gatewood, LHP/OF, South Decatur HS:  Gatewood is a 6’1”, 200 lb. athletic junior.  He shows plus speed, posting a 6.65 sixty time at the event.  He showed athleticism and a strong accurate arm from the outfield at 89 mph.  His actions are solid and moves well.  On the mound he shows a long, loose, quick arm action from a high ¾ arm slot.  He throws a fastball at 85-88 mph with late run.  His changeup stays down in the zone with good sink action at 72-75 mph and also shows a 1/7 breaking ball with late movement that he throws consistently for a strike.  At the plate his swing plane is slightly up hill and at times a little long, but shows quick bat speed with good power potential.

2.  Tanner Tully, LHP/OF, Elkhart Central HS:  Tully is a 6’, 175 lb. junior with good athleticism.  He displays good speed, running a 6.8 sixty at the event.  On the mound he throws from a high ¾ arm slot with quick arm speed.  He shows good life on an 86-87 mph fastball with late movement.  He throws a sweeping 73-74 mph breaking ball with late action that is consistently in the zone.  His other off speed is a 75-76 mph changeup with good sink action, consistently thrown for strikes.  From the OF he fields the ball well and shows good rhythm.  Tully was 85 from the OF.  At the plate he displays a good load with a short stride with good use of his lower half.  His bat speed is above average with a good swing plane.

3.  Aaron Murray, RHP/1B, Greenwood HS:  Murray is a 6’1”, 205 lb. junior pitcher.  Murray throws from a high ¾ arm slot with quick arm speed.  He shows a heavy fastball that was consistently 87 mph, topping out at 88 mph. He throws two off speed pitches for a strike; an 11/5 slider with good depth at 73-76 mph, and a 74-76 mph changeup with some movement. 

4.  Kevin Rex, LHP/OF, Park Tudor HS:  Rex is a 6’1”, 175 lb. athletic junior.  On the mound he shows some tilt in his wind up.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot with good arm speed, producing a good fastball at 84-85 mph, topping out at 86 with good movement and late action.  His breaking ball is solid at 69-70 mph, and throws it consistently for a strike.  His changeup is 76-78 mph with some sink action.  In the field he’s 88 mph and shows good accuracy.  His actions are solid and fields the ball well.  At the plate he shows an advanced approach with a balanced set up and good load.  His stride is short and uses his lower half well.  His swing is easy and shows some bat speed.  Rex shows the ability to drive the ball with some pop. 

5.  Kyle Fiala, SS/RHP, Carmel HS:  Fiala is a 6’1”, 155 lb. junior.  In the field he shows good rhythm with soft hands and quick feet.  He plays through the ball well and shows a quick exchange.  Across the diamond he is 80 mph.  At the plate he shows an advanced approach with a balanced set up and smooth load.  He shows a short compact swing with good bat speed producing line drives.  Fiala shows good speed running a 6.7 sixty at the event.  On the mound he shows good timing in his delivery with a slight pause.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  Fiala’s fastball was an impressive 84-86 mph, consistently in the zone.  He shows a 10/4 curve ball with good depth at 74-75 mph.  His changeup was 77-79 mph.

6.  Cole Bartlett, RHP, Hagerstown HS:  Bartlett is a 6’2”, 170 lb. junior.  Bartlett shows a very projectable frame.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot with a fastball sitting at 84-87 mph.  He shows an 11/5 curveball with late action at 69-71 mph.  His changeup shows good movement with arm side run at 72-73 mph. 

7.  Brian Wichman, LHP/OF, Columbus East HS:  Wichman is a 5’11”, 165 lb. junior.  On the mound he throws from a high ¾ arm slot with quick arm speed. Wichman’s delivery at times is a little choppy but shows high pitchability and should win a lot of games.  His fastball is 81-83 mph (over the summer up to 86) with good movement and is consistently in the zone.  He shows good speed on his breaking ball at 69-70 mph.  His best off speed is his changeup with good sink action at 69-70 mph. He also throws a 73-75 mph slider that is a plus pitch when he keeps it down in the zone.  In the field he shows good actions and moves well.  He’s 86 mph from the outfield.  At the plate he displays an advanced approach with a balanced setup and smooth load.  His bat speed is fast with a short swing.  He produces line drives and shows good rhythm.  Wichman shows good speed running a 6.84 sixty at the event.

8.  Devin Williams, RHP/1B, Evansville North HS:  Williams is a 6’4”, 165 lb. junior. Williams possesses long limbs with a wide, projectable frame.   He shows a clean arm action, with a short arm circle and a high ¾ arm slot.  His delivery is smooth and shows good timing. His fastball sits at 81-85 mph.  Williams’ shows a two plane slider with late movement at 72-73 mph.  He’s continuing to develop his changeup, which currently sits at 72-75 mph.  He’s a very projectable player and with continued development should be a highly touted prospect in the 2013 class. 

9.  Jack Thompson, LHP/OF, Carmel HS:  Thompson is a 6’, 190 lb. athletic junior.  From the OF he displays good defensive actions and moves well.  He’s 84 mph from the outfield with good carry on his throws.  At the plate is shows an advanced approach with a balanced setup and smooth load and good rhythm.  His stride is short and shows a short compact swing.  His bat speed is extremely quick and displays power potential and the ability to hit the gaps. 

10.  Demetrius Webb, C/MIF, North Central HS (Indpls.):  Webb is a 5’11”, 175 lb. athletic junior.  Behind the plate he’s quick and blocks and receives the ball well showing quick feet.  His arm works at 83 mph, but is a little long on his throws down to second.  He was a consistent 2.01-2.09 with his pop times, but once he shortens his arm action should be under a 2.0. 

11.  Mitch Roman, MIF, Hamilton Southeastern HS:  Roman is a 5’10”, 155 lb. junior. In the field he shows soft hands and plus actions and the ability to pick it.  He moves well and shows good range.  Across the diamond he was 78 mph.  At the plate he shows an open stance with good balance.  His bat speed is good and makes solid contact with some pop.  He shows some speed, running a 7.05 sixty at the event.

12.  Caleb Stayton, C/RHP, Elkhart Christian Academy HS:  Stayton is a 6’3” 200 lb. big bodied junior. Behind the plate he shows good footwork and a good arm (76 mph) with carry.  He was 2.0-2.1 with his pop time, but should be under a 2.0 once he shortens his arm action.  At the plate he has an advanced approach with a balanced set up.  His bat speed is fast and gets to extension well producing good barrel whip.  Stayton shows good power potential and the ability to hit the gaps.

13. Brad Hartman, MIF, St. Joseph’s HS:  Hartman is a 6’, 155 lb. junior with good athleticism.  In the field he shows quick feet and plays through the ball well.  His hands are soft and has the ability to pick it.  He gets rid of the ball quick and shows a good arm at 80 mph. Hartman displays good speed, running a 6.79 sixty at the event.  At the plate he displays an open stance with good bat speed. His hitting mechanics need some refinement but shows good barrel whip, producing some pop. 

14.  Austin Schultz, C/1B, Greensburg HS:  Schultz is a 6’, 200 lb. big bodied junior.  Behind the plate he is 2.08-2.1 with his pop times.  At the plate is where he excels most.  He displays an advanced approach with a slightly open stance and smooth load.  His stride is short and shows good balance throughout his swing.  His swing is short and quick producing good barrel whip.  He’s a line drive hitter with gap to gap power.   

15.  Nick Coudret, RHP/C, Castle HS:  Coudret is a 6’2”, 185 lb. athletic junior with a good body.  On the mound he shows an over the top arm slot, along with a loose, quick arm.  He shows good rhythm in his delivery and stays level.  His fastball was consistently at 80-83 mph, topping out at 84 and shows good run.  His 11/5 breaking ball shows early action and was consistently in the zone at 70-71 mph.  He also throws a firm knuckle ball at 68-72 mph.  Behind the plate he shows good footwork and a good arm at 75 mph.  He was a consistent 2.01-2.1 with his pop times.  At the plate he displays an advanced approach with quick bat speed.  He uses his lower half well and stays fairly balanced throughout his swing with good rhythm.  He shows the ability to barrel up most balls and shows pop potential. 

16.  Garrett Scott, RHP/OF, Fairfield HS: Garrett is a 6’2”, 180 lb. junior with a good build and projectable frame.  He throws from a ¾ arm slot with average arm speed.  His fastball sits at 80-84 mph topping out at 85.  His 10/4 breaking ball is 70-73 mph with early action.  Scott’s changeup is 73-76 mph with good sink action. 

17.  Nicholas Owen, LHP/OF, Center Grove HS:  Owen is a 6’1”, 175 lb. athletic junior.  From the outfield he was 84 mph with good carry and accuracy.  He moves well and shows good actions.  On the mound he throws from a high ¾ arm slot with a loose arm action.  His fastball shows good life with some run and late sink action at 81-83 mph.  He throws a 60-62 mph breaking ball consistently for strikes.  His changeup still needs to develop, but throws it for a strike at 68-70 mph.  At the plate he shows a balanced approach with a toe touch.  His swing path is a little long at times and slightly uphill.  He shows the ability to hit for some pop.  He shows some speed, running at 7.09 sixty at the event.

18.  Bryce Pennington, MIF, Speedway HS:  Pennington is a 5’11”, 165 lb. junior.  In the field he displays soft hands with good footwork and a quick exchange.  His defensive actions are solid.  Across the diamond he shows a good arm at 84 mph.  At the plate he hits from the left side.  He shows an advanced approach with a balanced set up.  His stride is short and shows good balance.  He displays good bat speed and the ability to hit for some pop. 

19.  Riley Futternecht, LHP/OF, Elkhart Central HS:  Futternecht is a 5’11”, 160 lb. junior.  In the field he was 82 mph with a long loose arm action.  On the mound he throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  His fastball is 79 81 mph and is consistently in the zone.  He throws a 70-72 mph breaking ball and a 68-69 mph changeup consistently for strikes.  At the plate he has the tendency to coil, but shows good balance with quick bat speed producing some pop.

20.  Dalton Combs, LHP/OF, Adams Central HS:  Combs is a 6’3”, 190 lb. athletic junior.  From the field he was 83 mph.  He shows good actions and good footwork.  On the mound he is over the top with his arm slot.  His fastball is 77-78 mph.  He throws two off speed pitches; a 59-61 mph breaking ball and a 62-64 mph changeup.  Both off speed pitches still need some development.  At the plate he displays a balanced setup.  His bat speed is quick and shows gap to gap power. 

21.  Dillon Hughes, SS/OF, Plainfield HS:  Hughes is a 6’, 175 lb. junior.  He projects as an outfielder.  From the OF he throws 78 mph from a low ¾ arm slot and moves well.  At the plate he shows a balanced setup with hands that work.  He displays good bat speed and pop potential.  Hughes shows good speed, running a 6.99 sixty at the event. 

22.  Mitchell Powers, RHP/OF, Castle HS:  Powers is a 6’4”, 215 lb. big bodied junior.  From the OF he shows good arm strength at 82 mph with some carry.  At the plate he shows good balance but is a little stiff.  His hands work and shows good barrel whip producing good pop.  On the mound he has an over the head pump in his delivery and good rhythm, throwing from a high ¾ arm slot.  His fastball was 81-83 mph.  He shows an 11/5 curve ball at 65-69 mph, and a 71-72 mph changeup with some sink and fade action.

23.  Glen McClain, C/RHP, Fremont HS:  McClain is a 6’1”, 170 lb. junior.  Behind the plate he shows an accurate arm at 74 mph.  His pop time was between 2.04-2.17 at the event.  At the plate he uses his lower half well and shows good balance.  He has the tendency to wrap his bat, but gets to extension producing good pop.  McClain is more projectable on the mound than in the field.  He shows a long arm circle with a high ¾ arm slot with average arm speed.  His fastball is straight at 81-84 mph.  He shows an 11/5 breaking ball at 74-75 mph.  His changeup is 67-69 mph.

24.  Adam Cornwell, RHP/OF, Bloomington North HS:  Cornwell is a 5’10”, 160 lb. junior.  On the mound he displays good rhythm and timing in his delivery.  From a high ¾ arm slot he throws a fastball at 81-84 mph.  He shows a 10/6 breaking ball with an early break at 67-70 mph.  His changeup is 72-73 mph.  Cornwell shows the ability to throw all three pitches for a strike.

25.  Quentin Stuart, C/IF, Muncie Burris HS:  Stuart is a 5’11”, 175 lb. junior.  In the field he shows a strong lower half and good footwork.  His hands work and shows the ability to get rid of the ball.  Stuart shows some speed, running a 7.12 sixty at the event.  Behind the plate he was a consistent 2.0-2.1 with his pop times.  At the plate he shows a slightly open stance with a tendency to dive at the ball.  He does display quick bat speed and barrel whip with some pop.
