No. 15 Bloomington South Wins Cross Town Pitchers Duel

BLOOMINGTON – Indiana University’s Bart Kaufmann Field hosted a cross town rivalry Thursday night between No. 15 Bloomington South and No. 21 Bloomington North. The game featured great pitching from both teams, in one of the best played games in the annual rivalry.

Both starting pitchers were sharp from the get go with South’s Gage Rogers up to 92 mph and his counterpart Dylan Stutsman up to 83 with impressive off speed pitches.

Both teams had their chances to score early, but only South could take advantage. In the second North got a leadoff double from Bryce Aldridge, but Rogers shut down the possible threat sitting down the next three batters, two with strikeouts.

In the bottom of the second South's Isaac Barrow led off with a single, and after a sacrifice bunt moved to second. Chase Daab's single put runners on the corners for the Panthers. Jordan Parrott came up with one down and hit a hard groundball to shortstop, and after getting the force out at second the throw to first was low and could not be scooped out of the dirt, allowing Barrow to score from third for the lone run of the game.

Stutsman took the loss, but after the run scored he retired 10 of the next 11 batters and 13 of the next fifteen. He allowed just four hits in the game without surrendering a walk and striking out five, throwing all six innings.

For South, Rogers was impressive in continuing to shut down any North threat. He threw five innings allowing four hits and striking out four to pick up his fourth win on the year. Three straight innings North had a runner in scoring position with less than two outs, but Rogers was never fazed any worked out of any potential damage unscathed.

North had their one best opportunities in the sixth inning. Max Williams led off the inning with an infield single that ended the day for Rogers. Lefty Cameron Prince came on, in a smart move by the Panther coaching staff. Prince is very different from Rogers, the lefty sat in the low seventies and used a lot of off speed pitches. After the first batter Prince faced reached on an error, the lefty was able to get three straight pop ups to escape without any damage.

The top of the seventh once again showed South’s ability to pitch under pressure. Jon Inman led off the North seventh by reaching second base on a throwing error. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, Prince again needed to pitch out of a tough jam. He got his fourth pop up of the game to put South one out away from the win. Zach Cleaver came up for North looking to extend the game and hit the first hard ball off of Prince. However, his line drive was right at the left fielder for the third and final out of the game, giving South the 1-0 win over rival North.
