Indiana Scout Blog : Notes from Around the State
May 18, 2023
After a busy few weeks of seeing talent from across the state, this scout blog includes notes on three prospects that are ranked number one in their respective graduating classes, impressive arms from the southern part of the state, standouts from the City and County Championships at Victory Field, and a group of uncommitted juniors.
#1 RANKED PROSPECTS
Max Clark, CF, 2023, Franklin Community HS
I have seen Max multiple times this season and he continues to prove why he is deserving of all the hype that surrounds him. Clark will likely be taken near the top of the 1st round in this year’s MLB Draft, and has put up eye-popping numbers in his senior campaign to go along with his five-tool skillset. The 6-foot-1, 200 pound centerfielder is slashing .655/.811/1.244 to go along with 9 doubles, 3 triples, and 6 home runs. The Vanderbilt recruit is leading the state with 45 walks and even when opposing coaches decide to not pitch to him, Max will turn a walk into a triple with his ability to routinely steal 2nd and 3rd, totaling 29 stolen bases in just 25 games. This look was on-par with his numbers, as he reached base safely in all 5 trips, hitting a double and a home run when he wasn’t pitched around or intentionally walked.
Brayton Thomas, LHP, 2024, Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger HS
The 6-foot-4, 220 pound southpaw has really transformed his body since last summer and is beginning to look the part of a professional prospect. Thomas was outstanding in this look, tossing a 7-inning, complete game with 12 strikeouts to earn the win. The Indiana recruit attacked hitters from a deceptive, low ¾ arm angle that produced a heavy fastball with major ASR at 87-92 T 93 mph and he was able to go to both sides of the dish with it. The sturdy southpaw held his velocity fairly well throughout the start, pitching at 87-89 mph in the 7th. His 73-77 mph slider was a plus pitch at times with sharp bite and the ability to get to a right-handed hitter’s back foot. I was impressed with his ability to locate his 78-80 mph changeup to his arm side when he needed it and he also flashed a 70-72 mph curveball for strikes early in the count. Thomas proved on this night why he will be one of the top prep left-handers in next year’s 2024 draft class.
Brandon Logan, CF, 2025, Fort Wayne Snider HS
Logan has been tearing the cover off the baseball thus far this spring, batting .537 with 9 doubles and a pair of home runs. It is encouraging to see the bat take a step forward as his calling card has previously been his ability to lockdown centerfield with game-changing footspeed, tabbed as the best defensive CF in the 2025 class by Shooter Hunt last summer. The 6-foot, 180 pounder has added significant strength this season, along with making adjustments at the dish to soften up his forward move to allow for more adjustability and consistent impactful contact. The Vanderbilt recruit was outstanding in this look, taking three quality at-bats against a premier arm, including a well-struck, opposite field double.
