Columbus, IN-- On another cold night, two ranked teams squared off in No. 12 Cathedral and No. 24 Columbus East. Velocities are still down due to the weather being cold and the lack of ability to get outside for practices. The game was low scoring with hits tough to find. Cathedral sent unsigned senior Mike Hammel to the mound. It was not Hammel’s cleanest start, but he competed very well and worked out some tough situations. The senior was consistently 82-83 and showed the ability to throw his breaking ball in any count. Hammel work 4 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball before giving way to junior Alex Boos. Boos continued what Hammel started and left Columbus East without a run. The two combined to strike out 7 and gave up four hits. Cathedral won with a final score of 2-0.
Cathedral manufactured their runs on a 2 run error in the second. The Irish were only able to produce three hits off of Peyton Gray and Brian Wichman. Gray worked 3 innings giving up two hits, while striking out three. Wichman was very impressive in the game. Wichman’s biggest knock throughout last year was his inability to throw strikes, but last night that is all he did. He finished the night giving up 1 hit and struck out 3 in four scoreless innings. Wichman featured a college ready breaking ball throughout the course of the night.
