On February 4^th, Prep Baseball Report Indiana hosted the Top Prospect Underclassmen Showcase at Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana.  The event consisted of 56 underclassmen from across the state of Indiana.  Here is a look at the Top 10 prospects from the event (more player results to follow later this week):

1.  Chad Whitmer, RHP/SS, Penn HS, 2013:  Whitmer is a 6-foot-2 inch, 190 pound junior.  From the wind-up he shows a high leg kick, good arm action and high three quarter arm slot.  His fastball is consistently 86-87 mph.  Whitmer’s breaking ball shows good tilt at 68-72 mph.  He shows the ability to throw his changeup consistently in the zone at 69-74 mph with good sink action.

2.  Alex Crowe, RHP/OF, Munster HS, 2013:  Crowe is a 6-foot, 200 pound junior with a strong build. From a high three quarter arm slot he shows plus arm strength with his fastball consistently at 86-88 mph, topping out at 89 mph.  Crowe’s breaking ball shows good movement when he gets on top of it at 63 mph.  Expect a sharper break when he throws it with more speed.  He throws two more off speed pitches; 69-70 mph changeup and a mid 70’s slider.  Crowe’s mechanics are still raw at this point, but once refined should be a high follow in the 2013 class.  He has one of the more lively arms in the class.

3.  Blake Cleveland, C/3B, Northwood HS, 2014:  Cleveland is a 5-foot-11 inch, 185 pound sophomore.  Behind the plate Cleveland receives the ball exceptionally well for a sophomore.  He shows the ability to block the ball well along with good footwork.  He shows a quick release, producing a consistent 2.1-2.15 pop time.  He shows good arm strength at 75 mph.  With time, his footwork will get better behind the plate allowing him to drop his pop time consistently. At the plate he displays a wide base with plus hands to go along with his short, compact swing.  He shows a level swing plane along with good bat speed and some pop potential. 

4.  Colin Brockhouse, SS/RHP, Northrop HS, 2014:  Brockhouse is a 6-foot-2 inch, 170 pound sophomore with good athleticism and some speed running a 7.1 sixty at the Goshen event.  From the field Brockhouse displays good hands and defensive actions.  Across the diamond he shows good arm strength at 83 mph.  At the plate he shows a solid base with good bat speed.  His swing plane is level to slightly uphill producing some pop.  On the mound he shows a high three quarter arm slot with solid mechanics for a sophomore allowing him to stay on top of the ball.  His fastball is consistently 82-83 mph, topping out at 84 mph.  He shows two off speed pitches; a 68-73 mph breaking ball and 70-75 mph change up with some sink action. 

5.  Alex Boos, OF/RHP/MIF, Cathedral HS, 2014:  Boos is a 5-foot-10 inch, 150 pound sophomore with the ability to play most positions on the field.  He projects as a second baseman, displaying good athleticism and defensive actions.  Across the diamond he is 83-84 mph.  At the plate he shows a clean swing with quick hands to go along with his balanced approach. Boos shows the ability to use all fields.  On the mound he shows a consistent 80-82 mph fastball from a high three quarter arm slot.  He throws 2 off speed pitches consistently for a strike; a 70-71 mph curveball and a 67 mph changeup.  Boos also shows a 65 mph slider.

6. Kevin Rex, LHP/OF, Park Tudor HS, 2013:  Rex is a 6-foot-1 inch, 175 pound athletic junior.  On the mound he shows a high three quarter arm slot with a tilt at the top of his wind up.  Rex was consistently 80-83 mph with his fastball.  He shows an 11/5 curveball at 67 mph along with a 74-75 mph slider.  Rex’s third off speed pitch is a 70-72 mph changeup with some sink action.  From the outfield Rex shows good arm strength at 83 mph.   Rex was rated the top hitter at the event. At the plate Rex shows a solid base with good weight transfer.  He   shows a plus swing that is slightly uphill.  Rex has the ability to use all fields with good pop.  Rex shows good speed running a 6.9 sixty at the Goshen event.

7.  Michael Poulos, RHP/1B, Munster HS, 2013:  Poulos is a projectable 6-foot-4 inch, 180 pound junior with long limbs.  He shows a long, loose arm action producing a consistent 83-84 mph fastball from a high three quarter arm slot.  Poulos’ breaking ball has good tilt at 65-68 mph.  His other off speed pitch, a 71-73 mph changeup, shows some movement and can be thrown consistently for a strike.  Expect a jump in velocity with his fastball this spring.  Poulos was a member of team Indiana in last summer’s inaugural PBR Midwest Future Games. 

8.  Jackson Boyce, MIF, Leo HS, 2013:  Boyce is a 5-foot-11 inch, 162 pound athletic junior.  He displays good speed running a 6.82 sixty at the Goshen event.  In the field he shows good hands and defensive actions.  Across the diamond he is 76 mph.  He projects to stay up the middle at the next level.  At the plate he hits from the left side with a balanced set up.    His hands are quick and gets to extension well producing some pop. 

9.  Shannon Baker, C/3B/RHP, Northridge HS, 2013:  Baker is a 6-foot-1 inch, 200 pound big bodied junior.  At the plate he hits from the left side.  He shows a wide base with good balance.  His swing plane is slightly uphill producing good pop.  Baker shows good power potential at the next level.  Behind the plate he is a consistent 2.14 with his pop time, and shows good arm strength at 76 mph.  On the mound Baker shows a high three quarter arm slot on his fastball at 80-82 mph.  His breaking ball is 65-69 mph with good movement, and keeps it in the zone on a consistent basis.  His changeup is 74-76 mph. 

10.  Austin McCart, MIF/OF, Elkhart Central HS, 2013:  McCart is a 5-foot-10 inch, 160 pound junior.  He projects as more of a third baseman at the next level.  Across the diamond he is 82 mph.  At the plate McCart shows a wide base with good balance.  He swing is a little long, but his hands are quick. 

10.  Riley Futternecht, LHP/OF, Elkhart Central HS, 2013:  Futternecht is a 5-foot-11 inch, 160 pound junior.  On the mound he throws from a high three quarter arm slot.  His arm action is quick producing a fastball at 79-80 mph, touching 82.  He throws a 71-72 mph changeup with some fade.  Futternecht shows two breaking balls, a 69-72 mph curveball and a 70-71 mph split.  With continued growth expect a jump in velocity this spring.
