Ft. Wayne Winter Preview: Catcher Analysis

On Saturday, February 28th, we hosted the Ft. Wayne Winter Preview Showcase at Norwell High School in Ossian, IN. A total of 51 players were in attendance. Below we analyze the nine catchers from the event,

Andrew Boshears, C, Seymour HS, 2018: 5-foot-10, 160 pound catcher was 2.19-2.30 with his pop times and 76 from the crouch. Needs to quicken up his feet. Average hands on the transfer, arm action is long. Loses momentum on his throws to 2B, needs to come through the ball. Average blocker. Hits from an open setup, using a long stride. Simple swing, short path to the ball. Line drive type hitter with good balance. Recorded a high exit velo of 83 mph.
Blake Castetter, C, FW Carroll HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 160 pound receiver was 2.44-2.60 pop times, 67 from the crouch. Slow hands on the transfer, slight pause before pulling the trigger to throw. Slow feet. Unbalanced in his secondary, long arm action. Hits from a balanced stance with no load a short stride average bat speed and a long path to the ball, has a tendency to pull every pitch.
Michael Krol-Cain, C, Andrean HS, 2018: 5-foot-9, 155 pound catcher was 2.29-2.36 with his pop times, 68 from the crouch. Showcased a quick transfer with good feet but has a tendency to pop straight up. Gets to his ear quick, but then reloads before throwing. Slow feet, average blocker. He hits in a balanced athletic stance with a smooth load and short stride, he has a fast bat with a long path to the ball. Line drive hitter that will hit for power as he physically matures.
Corbin Landrum, C, Huntington North HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 180 pound receiver was 2.10-2.18 with his pop times, 71 from the crouch. Pops up early and comes around the ball. Stabs at the ball. Shows good feet other than when he pops up early. Short, quick arm action. Offensively, hits from a balanced setup and loads back. Short stride with a tendency to over rotate his lower half. Average bat speed, pull hitter. Recorded a high exit velo of 79 mph.
Drew Minnich, C, Northwood HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 165 pounder was 2.07-2.19 with his pop times, 71 from the crouch. Wide stance in his secondary position. Average transfer, takes the ball too low. Short, quick arm action. Shows good athleticism when receiving and blocking. Offensively, hits from a crouch setup with a wide baes. No load, minimal stride. Average bat speed, level path to the baseball. Recorded a high exit velo of 76 mph.
Alex Mitchell, C, Decatur Central HS, 2018: 5-foot-9, 135 pound receiver was 2.17-2.26 with his pop times and 76 from the crouch. Showcased quick feet. Needs to come through the ball more, pops straight up. Average transfer, long arm action. Possesses some athleticism. He generates bats speed from both sides from an athletic balanced stance. Tendency to dive during the stride. Good balance. Long path to the baseball. Recorded a high exit velo of 74 mph.
Adam Paschal, C, Delta HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 165 pounder was 2.05-2.08 with his pop times, 75 from the crouch. Possesses quick feet with a clean transfer. Comes through the ball well. Arm action is quick, but has a tendency to get long at times. Moves well behind the dish. Balanced, athletic hitting stance with a short stride. His strength generates fast bat speed (81 RH- 75 LH) with a level path to the ball, gap to gap/ line drive type hitter. Behind the plate he has sure hands and quick feet, 2.05-2.08 pop time.
Ryan Tomlin, C, Norwell HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 195 pound catcher was 2.18-2.30 with his pop times, 73 from the crouch. Reaches for the ball, low hands on the transfer. Short, quick arm action. Average feet, double steps at times. The bat will carry. Gap to gap hitter with occasional HR power. He has a fast bat (89 mph exit speed) with a level swing and extension through contact. Hips explode. Short stride, smooth load. Good balance. At times spins off.
Brayden White, C, Cloverdale HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 200 pound catcher was 2.01-2.05 with his pop times, 74 from the crouch. Receives the ball deep, but has a quick transfer. Great arm slot and arm action. Tendency to come around the ball instead of coming through. Needs to increase his quickness. Hits from an open stance with a short stride and some explosion in his hips, average bat speed with a level path to the ball with extension through contact that will produce home run power.
