Class of 2017/2018 Fall Prospect Games: Team Carbon Position Player Analysis

The Class of 2017/2018 Fall Prospect Games took place at the University of Louisville on October 4 and included close to 60 players looking to establish themselves as some of the top young players in the state.  For Team Carbon, Daviess County RHP/3B Jack Schneider's raw tools stood out as he posted event bests in home to first time (4.28-seconds), arm strength (91 mph), and exit velocity (89 mph).

The following is a look at all position players from Team Carbon.

middle infielders

Collin Teegarden, SS, L/R, Boone County HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 135-pound prospect with lanky build, left-handed hitter hits from balanced stance, short stride, good rhythm and balance, short path to the ball, line drive type hitter with gap-to-gap approach, posted a 4.52 home to first base time, 72 mph exit velocity, went 1-for-3 in game play with a double to right field.  Defensively, shows soft hands, moves well with fluid actions, good body control with the ability to throw on the move from different arm slots, 74 mph arm strength across the infield, will continue to make strides with added strength, 2017 prospect to keep an eye on.

Brice Stuteville, 2B, R/R, South Spencer HS, 2017
6-foot, 160-pound prospect, lanky frame with room to fill in, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, line drive type hitter, showed mid to opposite field approach, posted a 4.88 home to first base time, 79 mph exit velocity off the tee, went 0-for-3 in game play.  Defensively, shows soft hands, quick/clean exchange, able to throw from multiple arm angles accurately, 71 mph arm across the infield.

Tyler Gabehart, SS/RHP, R/R, Fern Creek HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 135-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with short stride, long and level swing path, line drive type hitter has made strides in better use of lower half, good speed for age with 4.57 home to first time, 71 mph exit velocity, went 2-for-3 in game play with a bunt single and double to left field.  Defensively, showed good lateral movement, hands work, some accurate throws across the infield, 73 mph arm strength, continues to make strides in overall game.

corner infielders

Jack Schneider, RHP/3B, R/R, Daviess County HS, 2017
6-foot-3, 186-pound prospect, strong and athletic frame with projection, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, uses a leg kick with a short stride, explodes with lower half, foot down late at times with some timing issues early in BP round, was on time and squared it up in back half of round, ball jumps off bat when he squares it up, flashes power potential to the pull-side, 4.28 home to first time was the best at the event, 89 mph exit velocity was also the best at the event, went 0-for-3 in game play.  Defensively, shows good lateral movement, hands need continued improvement, big arm across the infield at 91 mph, inconsistent accuracy on throws to first base, speed and arm strength may project best in the outfield at the next level, big time raw tools, very high ceiling with continued development.

Thomas Larson, OF/3B, R/R, Families of Faith Christian (IL), 2017
6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect with athletic build, right-handed hitter hits from a slightly open stance and gets to square with short short stride, generates good bat speed through the zone, good extension through contact, showed improved use of lower half, flashes pull-side power, posted a 4.84 home to first base time, 88 mph exit velocity, went 1-for-2 in game play with a single to center and SAC fly.  Defensively, plays through the ball in the outfield, most throws accurate to third base, 80 mph arm strength with carry.  At third base shows adequate hands, long high-3/4 release, 80 mph arm strength across the infield.

Brian Baxa, RHP/1B, R/R, Danville HS, 2017
6-foot-2, 205-pound physical right-handed hitter, hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, gets lower half involvement in swing, level swing path, ball jumps when squared up, shows some power potential, posted a 5.12 home to first base time, 82 mph exit velocity (87 at previous event), went 1-for-3 in game play with a single to right field.  Defensively, shows soft hands, decent movement around the bag, accurate throws, 79 mph arm strength, 2017 prospect to follow.

Trent Shelby, 3B, L/R, McCracken County HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect with athletic frame, left-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, toe tap with short stride, hands show quickness, loose swing, explodes with lower half, shows some gap to gap power, posted a 4.88 home to first base time (4.62 at previous event), went 0-for-3 in game play.  Defensively, shows solid corner actions, most throws accurate across the infield, 74 mph arm strength.

Tate Meade, RHP/1B, R/R, Johnson Central HS, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect with athletic build, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a longer stride, level swing path, timing tends to be early, showed a pull approach in batting practice, posted a 4.77 home to first base time, 71 mph exit velocity off the tee, went 1-for-4 in game play with a single to left field.  Defensively, shows adequate hands at first base, 71 mph arm strength across the infield with accurate throws.

Sam Hein, RHP/3B, R/R, Owensboro Catholic HS, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound prospect, athletic build with broad shoulders, right-handed hitter hits from a wide/crouched stance with no stride, has a short path to the baseball, posted a 4.82 home to first base time, 74 mph exit velocity off the tee, went 0-for-4 in game play with pull-side contact in two at bats.  Defensively, shows adequate hands, average corner actions, long high-3/4 release with some accuracy, 73 mph arm strength across the infield.

catchers

Kaden Rose, C/3B/RHP, R/R, West Carter HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 190-pound prospect, strong frame, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, short swing path with extension through contact, good use of strong lower half, consistently squared the ball up in batting practice to all fields, shows some gap power, posted a 4.83 home to first time, 83 mph exit velocity, went 0-for-3 in game play.  Defensively, showed good arm strength for age on throws to second base at 76 mph, showed improved direction with footwork, release a little slower on this occasion, pop times ranged from 2.05-2.14, some accurate throws to the bag. As a third baseman, hands work, short high-3/4 release, 75 mph arm strength across the infield.

Tyler Redmon, C/SS, S/R, Pleasure Ridge Park HS, 2018
5-foot-11, 156-pound switch-hitter, from the left side hits from a spread stance with no stride, hands are set low, explodes with lower half, uphill path to the ball, showed better bat speed in batting practice than 65 mph exit velocity would indicate, from the right side balanced stance, shot stride, level swing path, line drive type hitter, went 1-for-3 in game play with a single to right field, posted a 4.83 home to first time from the right side.  Defensively, short high ¾ release from behind the plate, gains ground on throws, 69 mph arm strength, 2.19-2.35 pop times, young player with good upside, one to follow in 2018 class.

Dillan Sauerwein, C, R/R, Cooper HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 153-pound prospect, right-handed hitter, hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, hands load back, maintains good balance throughout swing, short swing path, line drive type hitter, posted a 4.90 home to first base time, 75 mph exit velocity, went 0-for-3 in game play making contact in each at bat, should continue to see improvement in offensive game with added strength.  Defensively, showed 70 mph arm strength from behind the plate, pop times ranged from 2.26-2.33, inconsistent accuracy on throws to second base, has room to improve pop times with quicker transfer and release.

outfielders

Nick Blair, OF, R/R, Owensboro Catholic HS, 2018
6-foot-1, 180-pound prospect, athletic frame with room to add strength, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, no stride, minimal load, shorter swing path, posted a 4.76 home to first time, 79 mph exit velocity off the tee, went 0-for-3 in game play.  Defensively, showed somewhat tentative two-handed approach to the ball on the ground, good setup on fly balls getting behind the ball, short high-3/4 release, inconsistent throws to third base bag, developing arm strength at 69 mph.

Devin Bishop, OF, R/R, South Oldham HS, 2017
5-foot-7, 140-pound prospect, right-handed hitter, hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, gets close to arm bar in load creating some length in swing, mid to opposite field approach, posted a 4.52 home to first base time, 72 mph exit velocity, went 0-for-3 in game play.  Defensively, shows athletic outfield actions, plays through the ball well, short high-3/4 release, very accurate arm on throws to the third base bag, 68 mph arm strength.

Bennie Day, OF, R/R, Jeffersonville HS (IN), 2017
5-foot-11, 140-pound prospect, long/lanky build, right-handed hitter hits from an open stance, long stride, long swing path with opposite field tendencies, gets lower half involved, posted a 4.88 home to first base time, 69 mph exit velocity, went 1-for-3 in game play with a single to right field.  Defensively, shows a two-handed approach to ball on the ground, can be more aggressive playing through the ball, good set up on fly balls, short high-3/4 release, 70 mph arm strength.

Robby Walsh, OF, R/R, St. Xavier HS, 2017
5-foot-9, 160-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, medium stride, gets to front side early at times, long and level swing path, line drive type hitter, posted a 4.71 home to first base time, 71 mph exit velocity off the tee, went 0-for-3 in game play.  Defensively, plays through the baseball, shorter 3/4 release, developing arm strength at 57 mph will need to improve, inconsistent throwing accuracy.
