Andrew Dutkanych, RHP, Brebeuf HS, 2022 (IN)

Tuesday night was the Indiana staff’s first look at the Vanderbilt recruit this spring and every bit of it lived up the high expectations we’ve grown accustomed to having with “Duke”.  The Brebeuf senior was lights out against conference foe Roncalli, pitching a complete game no-hitter while striking out 17 of the 24 batters he faced and allowing no earned runs in the 2-1 victory. Of the seven batters he did not strike out two were walks, three were groundouts, one was a fly out and the other reached on an infield error. The right-hander threw a total of 108 pitches, 68 for strikes.

In front of a packed house of professional scouts and crosscheckers, the Day 1 candidate in this year’s MLB Draft came out hot working 95-96 early while bumping a 97 once on our gun and multiple 97s on others; settling in at 93-95 with a lot of life through the zone. Prior to seeing him throw last night we had heard about his improved curveball which he previously would flash on occasion more to just keep hitters off-balance and used as a different look than his hard-biting slider. Last night he threw the curveball with much more purpose at 75-80, consistently in the zone for a strike with a lot more bite and depth than we’ve seen in the past. His go-to off-speed and out-pitch has always been the slider and it once again proved to be a potential plus pitch at the next level. At 84-88 the slider showed tight spin with deception and sharp, late break getting several swings and misses and called strikes.

At 6-foot-3, 207 pounds, Dutkanych is a confident, strong, durable right-hander with a bulldog demeanor, constantly attacking hitters with poise. He competes in the zone with four pitches, shows the ability to elevate the fastball when needed and has a true knack of how to put hitters away.
