Alec Caprarella, Peyton Jones Lead Plainfield Over Whiteland

By Ben Grossberg

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Quakers hosted the Whiteland Warriors last night in what would be a cold, windy evening. The Quakers received a strong pitching performance from Alec Caprarella and timely hitting from the bottom of the lineup to lead them to victory.

Senior pitcher Caprarella sat down the first nine batters he faced, racking up six strikeouts in the first three innings, and finishing with seven total on the night. He allowed just two hits in the game, both doubles in the second inning that led to Whiteland's lone run.

In the second inning, Plainfield's Tyler Garzinski doubled to start the inning and was later brought in on Kalib Clark's grounder. Justin Martin later singled, setting up Peyton Jones two run homerun, giving the Quakers the three run lead.

Whiteland scored their lone run in the fourth inning when Branton Sanders hit an RBI double, scoring Jared Adkins who doubled to start the frame.

The Quakers would add two more in the fourth and one in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-1.  In the fifth Gabe Burkhardt led off the inning with a single and was eventually brought in off Keaton Conner's RBI single.

Whiteland threatened in the top of the sixth after Caprarella hit two batters in the inning.  With two outs Caprarella was replaced by Nick Cottongim. Cottongim needed only one pitch to get out of the inning, inducing a fly ball to center to end the threat.

Anton Hummel came on in the seventh for Plainfield and set down Whiteland in order to end the game and give the Quakers a 6-1 win.  With the victory, Plainfield improved their record to 6-1 on the year.
